Ed Moulton leading the group in singing the
Battle Hymn of the Replubic
The Prez sez . . .
We
will honor Mary Gant, who is our La Cañadan of the Year, at a
luncheon meeting on May 7, 2008.
Clyde Hemphill will be honored as a
recipient of the Les Tupper Award. This years award winners
will be honored at 7pm on Monday, May 12, 2008, at the von
Karman Auditorium located at JPL. The public is invited.
The Prez introduced Daryal Gant and
Linda Magarian to give us an up-date on our Membership Drive.
Daryal reminded us that we have inducted 4 new members to date,
and that brings our membership to 82. Our goal is to end this
Kiwanis Year with a minimum of 90 members, and the members
present affirmed that this is a doable goal. Co-Chair, Linda
Magarian, piqued our curiosity by batting us with mention of a
special prize that will be announced next week. She did say
that the prize would be for new members. We will just have to
wait and see!?
The Prez had us sing the "Welcome
Back" song to Karl Johnson who is returning from an extended
trip.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Prez introduced member Dr. Paul
Toffel who, because of a very hectic work schedule, is unable to
attend our meetings on a regular basis.

Paul announced that he and wife
Beverly's home had been chosen as the 2008 Pasadena Showcase
House & Garden. The official opening of the Showcase Home and
Garden Tour is Sunday, April 20, and runs through May 18.
Information on tickets sales, days and hours of operation,
parking and parking shuttles is available on line at http://pasadenashowcase.org,
or by phone at 714-442-3872. Proceeds from the Showcase House
and Garden Tour goes to supporting children and the arts in many
ways. The Toffel home has historical significance, and is a
beautiful place to visit.
Carl Christensen started a sigh-up
sheet for attendance at the La Cañadan of the Year Luncheon in
honor of Mary Gant. Because of the anticipated crowd he needs
to know what members are attending and if they plan to bring a
guest. He has requested that everyone in the club let him know
whether or not they plan to attend.
Carl also started a sigh-up sheet
for an Interclub opportunity April 29, at Jewel City. Jewel
City meets for dinner at Clancy's Crab Broiler.

Frosty gave his SLA report as
follows: Dick DeGrey is recovering very well, and is able to get
around, Hal Thomas was with us today, and it is great to see him
at our luncheon meeting.

Howard Backer made a pitch for the
Dr. Training Program, and asked that we put what ever we can in
the cans on the tables. He wanted us to start a table challenge
to see which table raised the most money in their can.

Linda Magarian announced the next
Habi-Tour, and is passing a sigh-up sheet. From my own
experience I can say that it is a great opportunity to get an up
close and personal look the Habitat for Humanity program.
Linda also announced the fund raising raffle for a new Mercedes
at $100 per raffle ticket. All proceeds go to building more low
cost homes by Habitat for Humanity.
Frosty Challenge
Frosty - Fetus and med school?

Nick - Punch line - "Last time I
talked to a Bush I had to spend 40 years roaming the desert!"

Bill Watts - God is watching the
Apples.

The Prez called it a draw - the
diplomat.
THE PROGRAM

Bill and Sue Jensen
Glendale Firefighter Bill Jensen and
His wife Sue were our guest speakers, and presented a program on
the Fire Fighters Quest for Burn Survivors. Bill Jensen was
burned over 70% of his body while fighting a brush fire in
Malibu in October, 1996. Bill was not expected to survive, but
he was determined to make it back. He has been a spokesperson
for the Glendale Fire Department, and has had speaking
engagements throughout California and the US. Bill talked about
his many operations, and what it was like to be a burn victim.
He and his fellow fire fighters organized the Quest program to
aid burn survivors during their recovery. The program
specifically works with children are burn survivors.
HAPPY & SAD BUCKS
Clyde Hemphill got a call from Carl
Gesike (I apologize in advance for the spelling) congradulating
him on being chosen to receive the Les Tupper award. Clyde said
that it was great hearing from him, and that he was doing much
better.
Howard Backer related in graphic
detail his experience attending the LA Dodgers 50th anniversary
baseball game at Dodger Stadium. The short version is that he
took a nasty fall returning from the concessions stand, and
cracked or bruised a rib along with other scrapes and bruises.
He seemed to be up and about, and on the mend. Howard made a
$50 donation to the foundation in recognition of the Dodgers
50th anniversary.

Jack Dawson gave a Happy Buck to
welcome Paul Toffel to the meeting. He gave a second Happy Buck
for he and Paul having a common interest in motor cycle riding.
Jack offered a third Guilty Buck for having one of his hats
found under Sherre Ingram's bed. He explained that the bet was
in the vertical position. I am glad that is cleared up. Good
luck Jack!

Bob Martin gave a Happy Buck for
having attended his 65th High School Reunion in San Antonio.

Ellie Wildermuth had a Happy Buck
for the food that her and her grandsons sampled from our
barbeque at the Emergency Preparedness Expo.

Sheree Ingram had a Happy Buck being
able to visit with everyone.

Carl Christensen had a Happy Buck
for the weeding that he and Irene attended in Guatemala.
Tom Gilfoy had a Happy Buck for the
trip he and Dody are taking to Africa. They will be on a safari
for a couple of weeks. Sounds like a great trip!

Daryal Gant had a Sad Buck for his
Granddaughter, Summer, who failed on her first attempt to pass
her driving exam. But he had a Happy Buck because Mary said she
will pass on her second attempt. Good luck to Summer!!
