The Prez sez . . .

guests, that included the Terrific Kids and families, guests of
members and guests of the speaker who assisted him with the
wonderful presentation.
President Diane announced the La
Cañadan of the Year, from our club, Mary Gant
President Diane announced the
recipient of the Les Tupper Award; he’s from our club, too, the
well deserving, Clyde Hemphill
TERRIFIC KIDS

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Linda
Magarian told how you can get a ‘Fine Free’ button by
bringing guests who are potential members; she then allowed
those who have brought in new members but have not had an
opportunity to choose a ‘prize’ and the first was Nick
Berkuta for sponsoring his lovely wife, Mary Ann;
Doris Horwith also got a prize for
being a co-sponsor of her daughter-in-law, Melinda.
However, Doris immediately announced that Melinda
has had a rescheduling at work so will not become a Kiwanian.
The discussion was then whether Doris and
Emelita Bituin, the other co-sponsor of Melinda, had to
return their prizes. It was decided that they did not.
Mike Leininger requested volunteers
for April 12th for the LCF Chamber’s Emergency Expo
to help cook hamburgers and hot dogs; because the usual suspects
who assist with ALL cooking events will be out of town.
Unfortunately if Mike does not get enough volunteers
Kiwanis will not be able to cook.
Nick
Berkuta shared that Habitat for Humanity needed volunteers
to work tomorrow. Nick requested anyone that was
available to see him.
Howard
Backer asked that we all donate to the containers on the
table to help out with the Doctor’s Program that trains doctors
on treating children in trauma. Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha has
trained one doctor and that doctor is training another.
Prez
Diane announced that since Sheree Ingram has left to
take care of her aging and frail mother the club is left without
a Newsletter Editor. Norm Johnson has stepped in
and agreed to coordinate ‘Guest Editors’ who volunteer on a
week-by-week basis. A clipboard was passed for members to
sign up for the duty.
Mary Gant asked for a volunteer to
store Silent Auction items for the 2008 Wine & Gourmet Food
Tasting. Letters have been sent out and when items come in
a secure space is needed. Please see either Mary or
Clyde Hemphill if you have a room available.
THE PROGRAM
VP
Nick Berkuta introduced Russ Guiney, Director of
the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation who
came with very impressive credentials and who was an excellent
speaker. Russ oversees the supervisors for 140 parks,
numerous hiking trails, 5 pools, 19 golf courses and the
Hollywood Bowl plus other recreational areas. The Parks
Department has developed a theme for the year and the themes for
each month this month’s theme is ‘Stop and Smell the Flowers’
next month is ‘Take a Hike’ etc. all catchy and attention
getting. The Parks and Rec offers many, many programs from
Day Care and After School programs for Children; to many
activities that include the whole family as well as programs for
Seniors. They even team children and seniors who help each
other learn. Russ
was a fascinating speaker who had us listening to his every
word. He was assisted by Ken Ngoy and
Tony Tran from his department. There was time for a
few questions which he capably answered. Russ then
gave out tickets to the Renaissance Faire that was started in
Agoura but is now in the Santa Fe Dam area.
Sick, Lame and Ailing

Dr. Frosty
reported on Dick DeGrey who has not been feeling well but
is doing better; his wife, Shirley, remains not well.
Jeb Long’s step-daughter, Vicky, a cancer victim, is
doing quite well. Hal Thomas is o.k. but wife,
Julia, is still declining. Linda Magarian who
had a ‘heart incident,’ and was hospitalized for over a week, is
doing so well she was at our meeting today!
