The Prez sez . . .

Everyone wanted to know what was happening on Foothill Blvd., so Prez Steve Hagerty thrust the mic in Mayor Dave Spence's hand for a full explanation.  Dave said the improvement project is expected to last three months and includes new crosswalks, left hand turn lanes and center islands running from Church of the Lighted Window to Vons.  The biggest change will be at the corner of Chevy Chase and Foothill where there will be a light for a left hand turn from Chevy Chase on to Foothill.  Jack Dawson had requested an update on the Town Center last week, and the Prez called on Pat Anderson for an update.  Excavation is starting on the parking lot that will be under the Sports Chalet store and the Center is still expected to be open this time next year.  The new restaurant has not yet been announced.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Mary Gant had a bulletin board covered with newspaper articles about our Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event including a two page spread in the Outlook and an article in the Pasadena Weekly.

Next week we will be dark at noon, and our meeting will be an evening Installation Dinner at Oakmont Country Club.  Seventy-four people have already signed up for the event, which starts at 6 p.m.  Paul Westmoreland reminded those that haven't signed up yet to do so.

Bachy Bachmayer encouraged donations for Children's Hospital.

Pam Feterl is soliciting ads for the Travel Adventures program.  The first program will be October 13, and Club members should be receiving their tickets in the mail this week.  This is a fundraiser for our Foundation and everyone is encouraged to buy or sell at least four tickets.

Pat Anderson reminded everyone living in Sewer District #5 to watch for important information coming in the mail and encouraged everyone living in District #5 to attend one of the three public meetings being held to discuss the proposals.

Frosty Boyd had a slow SLA week (this is a good thing).  He had a nice phone visit with Dick DeGrey and was glad to see Jeb Long back for a lunch meeting.  Jeb reported that his stepdaughter, Vicki, has had good test results recently.

THE PROGRAM

Carl Christensen introduced our speaker, The Prez, who started the program with the seemingly worst tape recording we have heard.  It took us awhile to realize we were hearing a Swan Song.  After we had a good laugh, Prez Steve Hagerty told us the year has gone by quickly, but he finally thought he knew what he was doing ... now that he's done.  The Prez started the program by thanking all those who supported our La Caņada Kiwanis Foundation this year by joining the Century Club.

Special thanks went to Fred Schooley who contributed to the Millennium Club not once, but twice this year.

Steve claimed there were a lot of good Club members who kept any eye out to make sure he had enough help, guidance and support throughout the year.  The Prez circulated throughout the room giving out candy "eye balls" to some of those key people.  Those acknowledged were Bachy Bachmayer (Youth Services),

 Ken Lowe (Key Club Advisor),

 Lloyd Welch (Board Member),

Bob Wallace (Membership Records and Travel Adventures), Bill Scherkey (Secretary), Melinda Thompson (newsletter),

John Landrum (Treasurer)

, Jeb Long (Web Site and Information Data Base),

Mary Gant (Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting and new Board Member),

 Frosty Boyd (SLA),

Fred Schooley,

Charles Broberg (Clergy Day),

Karl Johnson (La Caņadan of the Year),

 Dave Spence (City Reports),

Jim Ackland (New Member Acquisition),

Carl Christensen (Programs),

Tom Burrows (Music),

Paul Westmoreland (Publicity) and Clyde Hemphill (Everything and All the Time).  Clyde received a broken eye ball since he was the one who asked.  Steve to take the position as President.  It was a great year by all standards!

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Paul Westmoreland had ten Happy Bucks for USC's good performance and one Super Sad Buck for UCLA.  Paul had another Happy Buck for Rutgers, which overtook UCLA in the football ratings.

Dr. Allen Perry Sr. had a Sad Buck for Tom Slaughter 'cause when you are over fifty, everything hurts, nothing works, and it ain't fun.  (See below for info on Tom's birthday.)

Mary Gant claimed UCLA was so bad the Club owed her ten Sad Bucks.  Unless there is significant improvement, Mary plans on changing her allegiance to the Dinuba Emperors.

Jeb Long had a Happy Buck because he was gone so long no one missed him (NOT TRUE) and then he had twenty Happy Bucks because the University of Texas has already had two football wins.

Tom Burroughs had ten Happy Bucks for USC's football win and another ten Happy Bucks for the cheerleaders at the game.

Ellie Wildermuth was celebrating Ohio State's three wins with Happy Bucks and refused to apologize for the size (small) of the schools Ohio State was playing.

Pam Feterl had a Hopeful Buck for UCLA and was sitting next to Mary Gant for comfort.

Daryal Gant just completed his year as our Lt. Governor and had ten Happy Bucks for all the help he received from George Lutes with computer graphics.  Daryal had a Humiliation Buck because Paul Westmoreland played on the Dinuba football team one year when they never won a game.  His last Happy Buck was to celebrate his achieving Past Lt. Governor status.

Clyde Hemphill had a Happy or Sad Buck .... something about criminals.  (Sorry, Clyde.  Too much background noise.)

Bob Wallace is taking a three-week trip to Europe and had a Happy Buck 'cause he'll be gone for three weeks.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows and Ed Moulton leading us in America the Beautiful, Hi Neighbor, and On Kiwanis.

Opening: flag salute by Daryal Gant and the inspiration by Linda Magarian

Guests:  Kiwanis spouses Irene Welch and Irene Christensen

Anniversaries:  See below

Birthdays:   Tom Slaughter turned 50 yesterday and gave fifty cents for his first 49 years and $49.50 for his next fifty years.  (No one corrected Tom, but he has actually completed his first fifty years.)   Tom said he tried to cancel his medical insurance when his premium went up over $100 a month when he hit the big 5 - 0.

Karl Johnson admitted he has been away for quite a few weeks traveling to Hawaii, Las Vegas, and a number of other places.  During that time he had his 45th birthday and joined the Century Club to celebrate 45 really good  years.

John Parady's birthday is next week.  He celebrated a little early by taking a ride in the Goodyear Blimp and even got to be the pilot for a while.  That was worth completing his Century Club.

Allen Perry Jr. has been flying under the Prez' radar and both his anniversary and birthday were overlooked.  Allen also had a word of advice for Tom Slaughter ... the second fifty years is when you really need your health insurance!

Fines:   It was the Prez' last chance to charge a dollar for lack of a Kiwanis pin.

Secret Greeter:  There were two this week - Sheree Ingram and Charles Broberg, and still some members did shake the hand of either one of them.

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:   Bob Wallace - who will be in Europe for the next three weeks and can't sell tickets.  The Prez suggested Bob forfeit his "take" but Bob knew Steve was a lame duck president.

Master of the Cash Box:    Carl Christensen

This Week's Editor:  Melinda Thompson

This Week's Photographer:  Paul Westmoreland

Webmaster and Coordinator:  Jeb Long
