The Prez sez . . .
Prez Steve Hagerty started with an
apology because he was unable to keep the promise he
made to
the club when he became president last year. You may or may not
remember that the Prez said Dinuba would never be
mentioned from the podium during our 2006-2007 Kiwanis year.
President-Elect Diane DellaValle and Vice President
Carl Christensen ruined Steve's plans as they were
both out of town last week, as was the Prez. Before
giving it sufficient thought, the Prez accepted Past Prez
Paul Westmoreland's offer to lead the meeting. Of
course, stand-in Paul didn't pass up the opportunity to
mention his hometown.
The Prez also encouraged everyone to
put Monday evening, September 17 on the calendar. This is the
evening Daryal Gant will be promoted to our ex-Lt.
Governor. There will be a sign-up sheet.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Talent, Talent ... Everywhere! So get ready
to share your talent for our Talent Show on September 12th.
Tom Burrows is still looking for volunteers!
Gigi Schleuter is still accepting
items for the Silent Auction on September 9. Even small
donations are accepted as she will combine smaller items to make
a package gift. Also .... next Thursday Gigi will have a
"wrapping party" at her house to get all the Auction Items
wrapped and labeled. The party starts at 7 p.m.
Bill Scherkey still has plenty of
tickets for the W&GFT. Just call Bill and he will
personally deliver the extra tickets you need. Remember, this
is our biggest fundraiser of the year - and success depends on
ticket sales.
Jim Ackland is helping Pam Feterl
with the Travelogues this year and reminded us to set aside
the following dates: October 13, November 17, January 12,
February 23, and April 12. The line-up of programs looks really
great!
Paul Westmoreland reminded us to keep
Wednesday evening, September 26 open for our installation dinner
at Oakmont.
Bachy Bachmayer reminded us to
contribute to Children's Hospital.
Allen Perry, Sr. will make a $50
donation to our Club if he can find a buyer for Hollywood Bowl
box seat tickets (4) and parking pass for September 8.
Bob Wallace gave his last warning.
Check your personal info on our website or in our Club "Blue
Book" and send all corrections and/or updates to Bob.
The directory is ready for a new printing, and this is your last
chance to make changes.
SLA Chair Frosty Boyd reminded us to
give Dick DeGrey a call; early afternoon is the best time
of the day.

Frosty Boyd
Carl Christensen is looking for a good
turnout next week for Apple for a Teacher Day.
THE PROGRAM

Michele MacNeal
The Parents' Television Council is a
nationwide advocacy group organized in 1995 to protect children
against sex, violence and profanity in entertainment. Our
speakers were spousal team Michelle and Bruce MacNeal.
Michelle is the President of our local chapter of PTC,
and Bruce was in the Key Club when he attended LCHS over
30 years ago. Nationwide, there are over one million members of
PTC who work together to encourage advertisers to support
socially responsible shows. PTC members write letters, make
phone calls and send emails to advertisers, producers,
legislators, cable and satellite TV companies. PTC also awards
a PTC Seal of Approval to shows and films so parents will know
which programs and movies can be viewed by families without
being assaulted by inappropriate images or language.
Michelle and Bruce brought several interesting
brochures about research that has been funded by PTC and done by
college students. Here are some interesting statistics:
By
the time a child graduates from elementary school, she will have
witnessed 8,000 murders on television.
A
profane word is used once every six minutes on network
television and once every two minutes on premium cable shows.
PTC says that sex, violence and profanity are
rampant in entertainment and have a huge effect on our children
and de-sensitize then to real life violence.
HAPPY & SAD BUCKS
Howard Backer had four Reprimand
Bucks because Gigi Schleuter, Bob Wallace,
Pat Flynn, and Jack Dawson forgot to sign in
today. They didn't get away with it, though, as Howard
checked them in himself!

Howard Backer
Sheree had a Happy Buck
for the great time she had with the Kiwanis Girls in Escondido
last week. It wasn't embarrassment that caused the redness on
Sheree's face; her Sad Buck was the
cuddling with her dog that turned into too much roughhousing.
Sheree got the worst of the deal.

Sheree Ingram
Glen Pettit had a Guilty Buck
for his bad math last week. He said he was celebrating
the 50th year of his business, but a recount verified it was
only 49 years.

Glen Pettit
Clyde Hemphill had a Sad Buck
for Ed Moulton's excuse for not wearing his
Kiwanis pin.

Clyde Hemphill
Pat Anderson was delighted to share
the news about the first big store to sign a lease in the new
City Center. Home Goods will occupy Building B and expects to
be operational within a year. Definitely worth a Happy
Buck.

Pat Anderson
Diane DellaValle had three
Happy Bucks: one Happy Buck for
Sheree's inspiration which included the observation that God
spelled backwards is Dog (you have already read Diane's letter
announcing her presidency with be the Year of the Dog); second
Happy Buck for all the fun at the Welk Resort with
the Kiwanis Girls; and the third Happy Buck for
all the nice guests at the meeting today.
