The Prez sez . . .

Prez Steve Hagerty said he had good news .... he will be gone next week.  The Prez turned to Prez-Elect Diane DellaValle - only to have her tell him she will be gone, too.  Turns out Vice Prez Carl Christensen will also be out-of-town, so good-natured Immediate Past Prez Paul Westmoreland offered to stand in and run the show next week.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Paul Westmoreland announced that Bob Wallace has offered to be Secretary next year, and Gigi Schlueter has agreed to fill the seat on the Board of Directors that Lloyd Welch had to give up due to health problems.  An election will be held next week.

Bob Wallace

Mary Gant has lots of postcards that can be sent out to advertise our Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event.  Just call Mary and she will make sure you get as many as you need.  These postcards can also be left with businesses around town and handed out to friends, neighbors, and acquaintances.

Mary also mentioned that Sheree Ingram is working on getting ads for the W&GFT brochure.  We can all help by soliciting ads ourselves and then turning over the details to Sheree.

Mary Gant read off an impressive and mouth-watering list of restaurants that have already agreed to have booths at the W&GFT this year.  She will have a more complete list by the end of August, but some that she mentioned included Kabuki, Twin Palms, Madelaines, Divina Cucina, Frank's Famous Bakery & Deli, and Gourmet a GoGo.

Gigi Schlueter requested donations for the Silent Auction.  Last year the Silent Auction raised $4,000; this year Gigi knows we can double that and raise $8,000.

Diane DellaValle announced there are only two more InterClubs - one on September 13 with the PhilAm Club and the second on September 19 with the Glendale Gateway Club.  The details are now listed on our website Calendar.

Tom Burroughs encouraged those hesitant souls with talent large or small to contact him about being in our Talent Show on September 12.

Bill Scherkey has extra tickets for the W&GFT.  Just contact him if you need more.  As a reminder, those that sell 10 tickets will receive one Comp ticket.

Paul Westmoreland reminded everyone to set aside the evening of September 26 for the Club Installation Dinner at Oakmont.

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS

Clyde Hemphill proudly presented Joel Smith with the Akron, Ohio Soap Box Derby award for Local Race Director - one of only six awarded nationwide this year.  Clyde gleefully announced that this award automatically made Joel our Honorary Soap Box Derby Chairman for lifeJoel said it was appropriate that Clyde present the award since Clyde did more work than he (Joel) did.

Joel Smith and Clyde Hemphill

Laurel Patrick, our past Kiwanis District 3 Lt. Governor, was visiting and announced that our club earned the Distinguished Club Award for the 2005-2006 year.  Laurel presented us with a certificate and a banner patch.  She presented Paul Westmoreland with a Distinguished President's pin and had a Distinguished Secretary's pin for Bill Scherkey.

THE PROGRAM

Randy Votsch

Randy Votsch is an enthusiastic, dedicated and interesting supporter of the Convalescent Aid Society of Pasadena.  In continuous operation since 1923, this organization provides all types of "at home" medical equipment - free of charge and with no time limits - to anyone.  The Society has over 30,000 items such as canes, commodes, walkers, wheelchairs, bath benches, hospital beds, trapezes, etc. and services the great San Gabriel Valley - including Glendale, Burbank, and the Crescenta Valley.  The Convalescent Aid Society pays for all operating expenses from income generated by an endowment.  Cash donations are only used to buy medical equipment.  Donations of used medical equipment are also accepted.  The biggest challenge this wonderful non-profit organization has is just "getting the word out."  The Convalescent Aid Society is located at 3255 East Foothill Blvd. in Pasadena.  The phone number is:  626-793-1696.  The web address is:  www.convalescentaidsociety.org

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Jack Dawson gave a buck to the cause.

Jack Dawson

Daryal Gant had a Sad Buck 'cause there was no news from Dinuba to brag about.

Daryal Gant

Howard Backer's Happy Buck was the result of Daryal not having anything to report about Dinuba.

Howard Backer

Gigi Schlueter gave a Happy Buck because Sheree Ingram sold ....

Gigi Schlueter

Frosty Boyd was still enjoying a weekend picnic attended by over 100 people to celebrate the 90th birthday of a good friend and that was worth a Happy Buck.

Frosty Boyd

Mary Gant's Happy Buck was for the great visit with her friends from Texas.

Mary Gant

Clyde Hemphill had a "Gotcha Buck" for Joel Smith, who still has two Soap Box Derby cars in his back yard that need to be fixed before they are taken to storage.

Clyde Hemphill

Mark Alexander was full of pride and great expectations because the football coaches poll rated USC Number One; that was worth a Happy Buck.

Mark Alexander

Fred Schooley really enjoyed the detailed diary Prez Steve kept on his week in Akron at the Soap Box Derby and had a Happy Buck to thank the Prez for taking the time to share his experience with us.  (If you didn't catch the story in last week's bulletin, make sure you take the time this week to go back and read it.)

Fred Schooley

Carl Christensen just returned from Montana where he took a raft trip down the Yellowstone River.  While there he visited the Bozeman Kiwanis Club and found out they need to drive 90 miles to have an InterClub.  Carl had a Happy Buck because we don't need to drive that far!

Carl Christensen

Ed Moulton had 20 Happy Bucks because our Soap Box Derby has matured into such a great annual event and because he had the honor of being the first SBD chairman.

Ed Moulton

Pat Flynn enjoyed the InterClub he recently attended but gave a Happy Buck 'cause he is really glad he belongs to our club.

Pat Flynn

Jim Ackland had a Sad Buck because Prez Steve forgot Jim's 59th anniversary.  Jim didn't hold a grudge and joined the Century Club.
