The Prez sez . . .

"Tom's Tunes" are wonderful entertainment before lunch each week, and Prez Steve Hagerty had us all thank Tom Burroughs with a big round of applause.  Next, the Prez thanked Diane DellaValle for running the lunch meeting last week.  Diane filled in for the Prez while he was at the Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio with his son.  The Prez promised to write more about his week at the Soap Box Derby, but in the meantime gave us a few details and had one special announcement.  Joel Smith, who has been chairman of our Soap Box Derby committee for several years, was one of only six people nationwide to receive a Local Race Director award.  (The Prez thought such a high honor should automatically appoint Joel to a lifetime position with our Club.)  About two out of three racers at Akron are eliminated after their very first race, but one of the contestants we sent to Akron came in second in the Superstock division.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Mary Gant announced that Bill Scherkey is providing each Club member with four tickets to the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event.  Any member who sells more than ten tickets will receive a complimentary ticket.  Last year the individual who sold the most tickets (20) was Bill Scherkey's daughter, Jean Scherkey.  In honor of her dedication, she will also be awarded a complimentary ticket for her success last year.  (She has already picked up 20 tickets she plans on selling this year.)

Tom Burrows put out the call again for Club Talent for our Talent Progarm on September 12th.

Bachy Bachmayer encouraged everyone to support Children's Hospital Network by putting some green stuff in the cans on our lunch tables.

Diane DellaValle told us there were three clubs left to visit this year for InterClub meetings.  Glendale Gateway Kiwanis Club meets the same time as we do, and there will be an InterClub with them on August 22.  A sign-up sheet was passed around.

Frosty Boyd gave his SLA report.  Dick DeGrey enjoys phone calls; it helps break up his afternoon since he must be at home all the time now to take care of ShirleyJeb Long's daughter, who is fighting cancer, is holding her own.  Hal Thomas and Julia have stabilized and are getting along at their new home.

THE PROGRAM

Carl Christensen introduced Doc Kane who is a Sound Engineer for films and TV.  Doc went to Disney on a one-day work assignment twenty years ago and has been there ever since.  Doc has worked with hundreds of actors and actresses and many directors, and he had lots of short anecdotes and insights regarding work style, abilities, and personality.  Currently, the TV show "Lost" is one of Doc's "babies" and he told us "Lost" has extremely sophisticated sound design.  Doc had a very interesting video he used to illustrate how sound design works.  Sometimes he has as many as 156 tracks running at the same time.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Clyde Hemphill had a Happy Buck because he thought Joel Smith deserved his Soap Box Derby award.

.
Clyde

Ed Moulton "seconded" Clyde's commendation for Joel with another Happy Buck.

Ed

Ellie Wildermuth had a Happy Buck for a wonderful time with out-of-town friends who came to visit.

Ellie

John Landrum was finally allowed to hook up to the new sewers on his street; that was worth a Happy (and Sweet Smelling) Buck.

John

Gigi Schleuter had a Happy Buck for Jack Dawson who made the first Silent Auction contribution for the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting (coming up on September 9).  Many more Silent Auction items are needed!

Gigi

Pat Anderson's Happy Buck was for Greg Powell who plans to join our Club.

Pat

Daryal Gant also had a Happy Buck for Greg and another Happy Buck so he could brag about Dinuba.  (Anthony Portantino reminded us that Cruz Bustamante is from Dinuba.)

Dinuba Daryal

Diane DellaValle added her Happy Buck as a welcome to Greg Powell. Frosty Boyd had a Sad Buck because the air conditioning was so strong, Bill Watts had to put his linen napkin across his shoulders to keep from freezing.

Prez Steve Hagerty had twenty Happy Bucks for all the fun he had at the week-long Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio.  The Prez said the announcers never got it right, so the name of our city was always pronounced like the country to the north of the USA.

Steve

Anthony Portantino (our local Assemblyman) was proud the California Assembly passed a budget at 4:15 a.m. on Friday.  (The Senate still hasn't and may have to meet the rest of the summer.)  Anthony said it was Great To Be Back, and that was the real reason for his Happy Buck.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows and Ed Mouton leading us in This is My Country, Hi Neighbor, Happy Birthday/Anniversary and Come On Kiwanis

Anthony Portantino was happy to be home from Sacramento and introduced his daughter, Sophia, who will be a junior at LCHS and just returned from four weeks at a summer camp in Minnesota where she was totally immersed in the Spanish language and didn't speak any English.

Daryal Gant introduced Greg Powell who is an architect here in LCF.  Greg attended a lunch meeting last year and showed up today with an application to join our Club.  What a great surprise!

Anniversaries:  There have been many July anniversaries and today there were lots of contributions to our La Caņada Kiwanis Foundation.  Glen Pettit had an anniversary this week but must have been out-of-town celebrating.

Mel Wilson's anniversary was on July 17th; Mel and Dee have been married 58 years, and Mel contributed a dollar for each year.

Mel

Al Restivo and Diane celebrated 44 years of marriage on July 7.

Al

Mike Leininger and Nancy celebrated their July 1 anniversary by going back to the Hotel Del Coronado ... where "it" all started; Mike contributed $35 - one for each year.

Mike

Diane and John Landrum reached their 56th anniversary this month and Diane also celebrated her birthday on the 13th.  Since the sum of both was greater than $100, they joined the Century Club with a $100 donation.

The Prez overlooked Howard Backer, whose 27th anniversary is coming up in a few days.  Howard said his successful marriage is partially due to his ability to say "Yes, Dear."  He joined the Century Club too.

Howard

Birthdays:  Frosty Boyd celebrated his birthday on July 5th; he wouldn't divulge his age but generously contributed a "C" note (Century Club) to our Foundation.  Joel Smith had a birthday on July 12 and matched Frosty's pledge.  Tom Burrows just celebrated his birthday on July 20; although he's not quite 80 years old he contributed $80 big ones.
