The Prez sez . . .

Our Prez Steve Hagerty was out-of-town which gave Prez Elect Diane DellaValle a chance to practice running a lunch meeting.  Diane's warmth and gracious manner kept her afloat even though she had to take off her shoes to keep from falling through the cracks.

The Prez Elect sez . . .

It was an honor to present Gigi Schleuter with her permanent Club Badge and welcome her with a big hug!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tom Burroughs is still looking for talent for the Talent Show on September 12.

Mary Gant reminded everyone the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting is coming up on September 9.  A big boost for us this year ... the LCF Education Foundation has already taken a block of 350 tickets they intend to sell.  Silent Auction items are still needed and as well as suggestions for good restaurants.

Karl Johnson is still collecting used printer cartridges, eyeglasses, and the tops from soda cans.  This collection/recycling effort is one of our ongoing fundraising projects, and the dollars do add up.

Secretary Bill Scherkey encouraged members to consider attending the Cal-Nev-Ha convention in Reno on August 23-26.  Contact Bill for a registration form.

Bachy Bachmayer reminded us to support Children's Hospital by contributing to the cannisters on our lunch tables.

Frosty Boyd gave his SLA report; Dick DeGrey still really enjoys a call during the afternoon - as he spends almost all of his time at home taking care of ShirleyJulia Thomas recently had a fall and broke her hip.

THE PROGRAM

Arthur Cobery was introduced by former student Carl ChristensenArt was a teacher in Burbank for over 30 years and is now very involved with the Historical Society of Crescenta Valley.  The background on the Flood of 1934 is most connected to the unique geography of our San Gabriel mountain range.  Some interesting statistics about the San Gabriels:  it is one of the fastest growing mountain ranges in the world (about 1/10th inch per year), it is disintegrating faster than almost all other mountain ranges in the world, and it has some of the steepest slopes.  It isn't the water per se but the flood debris that creates the extremely dangerous and unique nature of our local floods.

Art Cobery

The 1934 rainfall was fairly normal until the last week of the year.  Winter storms dropped over 14 inches of rain that week, but there was very little damage even though there had been a fire in November that burned the lower portion of the San Gabriel Mountains from Tujunga to the Arroyo.   New Year's Eve celebrations were held on schedule, but toward the end of the evening there were two cloudbursts in the mountains, which precipitated a terrible flood.  Dirt and rock were pushed by water from Pickens Canyon and many lives were lost in the La Crescenta/Montrose area.  Forty-nine homes were demolished, 50 homes were washed away and at least 28 people died.  Twelve of those people were celebrating New Years in the American Legion Hall at the corner of Rosemont and Fairway (one block above Montrose Avenue).  A memorial has been built and dedicated by the Historical Society at that corner.

The Historical Society of Crescenta Valley has meetings on the third Monday of every month at 7:00 PM at the La Crescenta Church of Religious Science located at the intersection of Dunsmore and Santa Carlotta.  Each monthly meeting features a different speaker; the public is welcome.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Sheree Ingram had some Happy Bucks ... something about selling tickets last week.

Sheree

Mary Gant had a Happy Buck for the wonderful Summer Social on Sunday that was chaired by Harriet Hammons.

Mary

Harriet Hammons had lots of Happy Bucks:  for the opportunity to attend the terrific Kiwanis International Convention in San Antonia in early July; for all the help putting on the Summer Social at the Toffels house on Sunday (including helpers Clyde Hemphill, Clyde's son (the chef), Mary Gant, Gigi Schleuter, the Toffels - just to name a few); for her upcoming trip to London to the Boy Scout World Jamboree.

Harriet

Paul Westmoreland had Happy Bucks - but his reasons became a little muddled as Mary Gant tried to take over his camera and had it turned upside down - something about Arizona and the good weather here in Southern California.  Paul also had a very Sad Buck for a 42-year-old nephew who died suddenly.

Paul

Ed Moulton had a Happy Buck because he bought a Thank You card to send to the Toffels that he intended to bring to the meeting to have everyone sign.  His Sad Buck was because he and his lovely wife, Connie, both signed the card, addressed it and put a stamp on it ... and then accidentally stuck the card in the mail instead of bringing it to the meeting.

Ed Moulton

Clyde Hemphill was the proud dad and had a Happy Buck for the Summer Social and the well-cooked food.  He also had a Sad Buck because less than 20% of our Club members were able to attend.

Clyde

Dave Spence had a Sad Buck because he forgot to lock his car while in a LCF parking lot and had his checkbook (which was on the seat) stolen.  Dave's Happy Bucks were due to the call from the bank that recognized a bad check had been written on his account and due to the quick arrest of two suspects who turned out to be drug dealers/users with previous arrest records.

Dave

Karl Johnson missed our meetings recently but had Happy Bucks for traveling he has been doing with his family climaxed by a camping trip with his five year old daughter.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows and Ed Moulton leading us in America the Beautiful, Welcome Back, Hi Neighbor, Happy Birthday and On Kiwanis

Opening: flag salute by Bob Martin and the inspiration by Frosty Boyd

Guests:   Pat Anderson introduced La Caņada resident Jerry Beckman and Jack Dawson introduced a tennis partner, Nino DombreJack volunteered $25 if anyone could guess Nino's age (within two years); he had to pay up when someone guessed "92."  Nino looked about 70, so that was a lucky guess!

Welcome Back:  Karl Johnson

Birthdays:   Pat Flynn volunteered that his birthday was last month, and he was also celebrating his birthday from last year.  He doubled his age and donated $156.  What a great way to support our La Caņada Kiwanis Foundation!
