The Prez sez . . .

Prez Steve Hagerty's son is a Soap Box Derby Rally Race champion and will be competing in Ohio in July.  Steve needed to build a shipping crate for his son's car.  Clyde Hemphill and Nick Berkuta came to Steve's rescue, and the crate was completed last weekend.  The Prez said he intended to make a donation to our Kiwanis Foundation calculated at $30/hour for the time Clyde and Nick spent building the crate.  However, he heard "that's close enough" so many times, Steve decided a rate of $7.50 for unskilled labor was a more appropriate wage.  Steve made sure we all saw him hand his cash donation to Treasurer John Landrum

Since we wanted time to get to know all the scouts who were our guests today, Steve dispensed with most of our normal meeting agenda and moved right on to announcements.  He made a few quick announcements of his own and then asked for all other announcements before he began introductions of our many guests.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Harriet Hammons and Linda Magarian attended the award's ceremony at Union Avenue School for our Awesome Reader program.

Our Summer Social is set for July 15.  Come and enjoy good fellowship and delicious grilled chicken and tri-tip at the Toffels.

THE PROGRAM

This was Scouts Day, and we were honored to have 14 Boy Scouts, 4 Girl Scouts, several Scout Leaders and quite a few parents join us for lunch.  After all guests were introduced, Ken Lowe asked the scout leaders to give us an overview of their troops.

Ken Lowe

Ron Donnelly and Mike Devine lead Troop 507 from St. Bedes.  The troop has been in existence for 53 years and currently has 70 scout members.  This is a high adventure troop and every month they have at least one wilderness activity.  This year 10 boys earned their Eagle Scout award and four of those Eagle Scouts were at our meeting.  Leader Richard Kern has 60 boys in Troop 509; this troop started at JPL in 1952.  There are 60 boys in this troop and 11 boys earned their Eagle Scout Award this year.  In 1991 a Boy Scout Troop was started at Delphi Academy; although Delphi Academy has moved out to Lake View Terrace, the troop "roots" are here in La Caņada.  The Girl Scout organization in La Caņada is 1,000 girls strong, and there were 35 girls who earned their Gold Award this year.  An amazing statistic ... over 50% of all Brownie Scouts stay in scouting through high school and earn their Gold Award.    The LCF Girl Scouts logged over 8,000 service hours last year.

Carlos Cortez

Our own members Carlos Cortez, the Executive Director of the San Gabriel Boy Scout Council and Harriet Hammons, the International Representative for the Verdugo Hills Boy Scout Council also took a turn at the mic.

Harriet Hammons

When Carlos asked all Eagle Scouts to stand up, several of our Club members stood up with the young men.  The last half hour of the program was truly inspirational.  Each scout took the mic and told us about his/her scout activities, service projects, education goals, favorite school subjects, and other interests and passions.

This great group of young adult scouts included Girl Scouts Nikki Nathan, Katie Nathan, Brittany Fors, and Lacey Miyazaki

The Boy Scouts were James Hougen, Eric Gustafson, Abraham Frandsen, Josh Newton, Clarke Anderson, Benjamin Ritter, Patrick Riggs, Evan Key, Michael Worley, Collin Chersi, John Callow, Edwin Myers, Joseph Meenan, and Ryan Lew.
