ANNOUNCEMENTS Frosty Boyd announced the passing of Hal
Crockett at age 91 on June 8th of a heart attack. He
was an active member of the community who will be greatly
missed.
SPECIAL PRESENTATION Honoring, RICHARD HARRIS,
La Cañadan of the Year for his outstanding volunteer service
and leadership rendered to the community of La Cañada
Flintridge.

Richard Harris
Each year the La Cañada Kiwanis
Club selects and honors the “La Cañadan of the Year” based on
current and long term broad based involvement in volunteer
community service, demonstrated leadership qualities, their
active role in bringing positive recognition to themselves and
to the community of La Cañada Flintridge. This individual is
honored at a Kiwanis luncheon in Van de Kamp Hall at Descanso
Gardens, La Cañada Flintridge.

Richard Harris introducing his family
Richard (Rich) Harris,
President/CEO of the Caltech Employees Federal Credit Union, has
been named 2007 La Cañadan of the Year. He will be presented his
award at the Kiwanis Luncheon on June 13.
Rich was raised and has lived in
La Cañada Flintridge since his birth, attending La Cañada public
schools, kindergarten through high school. He acquired a BS
degree in Finance/Economics from California
State University,
Los Angeles. He completed the Executive Development Program at Stanford University
Graduate School of Business in 1993 and the Advanced Leadership
Institute at the Harvard School of Business in 2004. He
currently holds the National Association of Federal Credit
Unions certification as a Certified Compliance Officer (NCCO)
for federally chartered credit unions.
Rich has been President/CEO of
the Caltech Employees Federal Credit Union, and Treasurer of the
Board of Directors, since 1986. The $750 million Credit Union
maintains its Administrative Headquarters and Main Office in La Cañada Flintridge, with offices also on the Campus of the
California Institute of Technology and at the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge. The Credit Union provides
personal financial services to employees, members, retirees,
students, Associates, and family members of the California
Institute of Technology, Caltech Alumni Association, Jet
Propulsion Laboratory (NASA), Polytechnic
School, and The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens. He has been in the
credit union industry since 1981 serving on many California
Credit Union League Committees and Advisory Groups. His
continuing education has focused on compliance and advanced
financial/investment management related to credit unions and
non-profit organizations.
Rich has been very active in
community services virtually all of his adult life and says that
he believes with great passion that it is important to give back
to the community that he is so proud to have been born and
raised in. His conviction is a reflection of his father, Lou
Harris, founder and owner of La Cañada Heating and Air
Conditioning from 1954 through 1979. Lou Harris was a member of
the La Cañada Kiwanis Club for many years and was active in
community services through this organization. Rich says that he
set a great example for him, by example, in giving back to your
community.
A look at Rich’s current and
past community services shows how busy and dedicated he is and
has been in community services.
Rich has been a member of the
Board of Directors for the Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation,
since 1998 and currently holds the position of Chairman of the
Board. He is also a member of the Verdugo Hills Hospital Board
of Directors.
He has served as a volunteer
uniformed Deputy Sheriff, having graduated from the LA County
Sheriff Academy in 1976, is a member of the Board of Directors
for the Los Angeles County (Crescenta
Valley) Sheriff’s Support Group, was the president for six years and now holds
the title of “President Emeritus”.
He is a Patron Friend of the
Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens, has served on the
Board of Trustees of the La Cañada Flintridge Community Center
and was active in the Cub Scouts and other school and student
support groups while his children were in school.
Rich and his wife Debbie reside
in La Cañada Flintridge. They have three children ages 30, 28
and 18. His children all attended La Cañada public schools.
While his children were in school Rich was active in all of
their activities including La Cañada High School Choral
Department, Drama Department, sports and student body
leadership. He served as Cub Master, Palm Crest Elementary
School Pack 515 Cub Scouts, treasurer of the La Cañada High
School wrestling team parent organization, as a parent leader of
the Girls Varsity Volleyball team and a fundraiser for the Drama
Choral program.
His oldest son Micah resides in
Phoenix Arizona, his daughter Rachael resides in Washington DC and son Joe is in his fresman
year Loyola Marymount University.
Rich’s hobby and great joy is
playing golf. With all modesty he says he does not qualify, in
any sense, as being good at the game. But he does have memories
of a few great shots which keeps him coming back to the game.
Richard Harris, an outstanding
citizen of La Cañada Flintridge, is well deserving of this of
this recognition and the La Cañada Kiwanis Club is honored to
name him the 2007 La Cañadan of the Year.
