The Prez sez . . .

Joel Smith deserved many thanks for putting on another successful Soap Box Derby.  Prez Steve Hagerty said he was giving thanks as both the Prez of our club and as a parent; Steve's son was one of the racers.  Modest Joel responded by directing attention to the many Club members who helped and had them all stand up for another round of applause.

The Prez reminded all board members and committee chairs about the Board Meeting this Thursday evening at Citibank at 7:00 p.m.

Since July 4th falls on a Wednesday, the Prez took a vote to see if we wanted to meet on that holiday.  Apparently many people will be out of town or already have other plans.  The vote was overwhelming; there will be no meeting on July 4.

The Prez invited Sheree Ingram to the front to auction off a certificate for a hair cut and styling at a local beauty salon.  Sheree insisted Frosty Boyd couldn't participate, but a few other people "of hair" bid up the certificate to $35.  Pat Anderson was high bidder.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Mike Leininger will be passing around a volunteer sign-up sheet for the Pet Clinic on June 21st.  This is really an enjoyable evening if you love dogs and cats, so mark your calendars now and sign up soon.

Bill Scherkey is going on vacation in a few days, so he needs all reports from Committee Chairs ASAP.  He must file the monthly club report with Kiwanis International before he leaves.

Karl Johnson wanted to make sure everyone who is coming to the meeting next week has signed up.  It will be La Cañadan of the Year and this is one of the few meetings each year where you must sign up ahead of time.

Pat Anderson announced the next Chamber Mixer on June 21.  This is the annual Fiesta mixer held at the Valley Sun every year.  So if you aren't volunteering at the Pet Clinic that night, put the Mixer on your calendar.  On June 28 at 11 a.m. there will be a ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of Flintridge Bookstore and Coffee Shop in the old Trotta building on Foothill Boulevard.

Bachy Bachmayer asked us to contribute to the Children's Hospital Network by filling up the Children's Hospital cans on our lunch tables.

Diane DellaValle requested every club member who has not attended an interclub call her to arrange a convenient time and date.

TERRIC KIDS

Tom Slaughter did the honors today, and we met a wonderful group of Terrific Kids from Palm Crest Elementary School and their Terrific Parents and Terrific Grandparents.

Derek Veruttipong enjoys school and working with his classmates and his teachers.  He was selected as a Student of the Month by his classmates in the 5th Grade and now helps out as a teacher’s aid.  Derek has a hearing problem that makes school difficult for him.  He works hard with his school work.  His favorite words are “I am not giving up.”  He helps around home with chores and yard work.  Derek has a positive attitude and a good sense of humor.

McKenzie Dodge enjoys dancing and tumbling.  She is presently taking art classes.  McKenzie plays softball with the La Cañada Junior Baseball Association.  She likes hanging out with her friends.  McKenzie has recently become a member of the National Charity League and visits seniors at a retirement home.

Alex Frank enjoys playing sports.  He is an avid tennis player and competes in tournaments locally.  He likes spending time with his classmates.  Alex is a good student and works at getting good grades.  Alex was a cast member of the sixth grade play.

Evelyn Choi works at helping out in the classroom.  She is a quiet leader.  Her favorite subject is art, and she enjoys playing the piano.  Evelyn enjoys athletics.  She plays soccer with the Pasadena AYSO and is taking swimming class at the La Cañada YMCA.

Sahar Moheize likes working with her teachers and her classmates.  She enjoys art and painting.   Sahar is a very good student.  She enjoys math and science.  Sahar is a Girl Scout and has just bridged over from Junior to Cadet.  She plays soccer and also plays softball with the LCJBA.

India Williams enjoys dancing and theater arts.  She is a Girl Scout and has recently bridged over from Junior to Cadet.  India enjoys soccer and plays for the Pasadena AYSO.  She enjoys being with her friends and likes working on class projects.  India is a member of the National Charity League.

THE PROGRAM

Tim and Carol Scheck were introduced by Carl Christensen. Tim is a member of the A.M. Club and he and Carol gave a wonderful talk and slide show on Tahiti.  Carol fell in love with Tahiti in 1979 and purchased a timeshare there on her first visit.  She and Tim have been going to Tahiti every year since the late 80s and know the islands very well.  They had great pictures and a very interesting commentary.  We didn't even notice when 1:30 p.m. came and went.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Celebrity Soap Box Derby racer Diane DellaValle knew she was faster than her A.M. Club competitor Shirley Hingst but took the slow lane to defer to Shirley's age.  In spite of her magnanimous effort, Diane won by .01th of a second.  That was worth a Happy Buck.

The grant that Linda Magarian and Harriet Hammons submitted for our Literacy Program was approved, and Linda had Happy Bucks because now there will be money to pursue some additional projects.  Linda also had Thank You Bucks for Mary Gant and Clyde Hemphill who helped put the finishing touches on the grant request before it was submitted.

Frosty Boyd was hard to hear, but he had a Happy Buck because he was able to use up the leftover burgers and buns from Memorial Day.  Did he eat them all himself?

Sheree Ingram had a whole bunch of Happy Bucks for a variety of good things.  One of them was for Bob Wallace who set up her tent again after the wind blew it down at the Soap Box Derby.

Joan Peters had two Happy Bucks for her great Flintridge Prep Key Clubbers.  The older Key Clubbers were all taking SATs on Saturday morning, so they delegated the refreshment booth at the Soap Box Derby to some brand new 8th and 9th grade Key Clubbers who did a fine job with the help of the father of the Key Club president.

Pam Feterl had a great time driving a trailer and shuttling the Soap Box Derby cars and riders all day Saturday.  It was her first Soap Box Derby and her Happy Bucks were for a long but very enjoyable day.

Clyde Hemphill had both a Happy and a Sad Buck.  Apparently he tricked Joel Smith into taking a Celebrity Ride down the Soap Box Derby hill, competing against a member of California Families.

Fred Schooley had a Happy Buck for his tennis partner, Tim Scheck, who was our speaker today.

Melinda Thompson had five Happy Bucks to celebrate her mother's 92nd birthday yesterday.  At dinner, Melinda mentioned her recent conversation with Mary Lee Becwar whose husband was from Springfield, South Dakota.  Melinda's mother taught in a one room schoolhouse near Springfield and could still remember the first names of three Becwar siblings who were her students.  Melinda plans on finding out if they were related to Andy Becwar.
