ANNOUNCEMENTS: Bill Scherkey stated that long time La Cañadan and past partner of his and Melinda’s, Roy Chafin pasted away.  Bill told of the many ways Roy was involved in our community.  The internment will be at Rose Hills Memorial Park in the Hillside Chapel on Friday, April 13th at 1:00 p.m. and a memorial service will be at the La Cañada Presbyterian Church at 4:00 p.m.

Paul Westmoreland said that the Nominating Committee met and he presented the slate of officers for the year 2007-08.  They are:  President, Diane DellaValle; President Elect, Carl Christensen; Vice President, Nick Berkuta; Board of Directors for 2007-2009:  Clyde Hemphill, Linda Magarian,  Fred Schooley, and Norm Johnson.  A  motion  was made to accept the slate and an election will be held in 2 weeks

Pat Anderson reminded and invited everyone to the Chamber mixer on Thursday, April 19th at LCHS where their Culinary Arts department will be highlighted by serving their food.  Also Pat told all that she has La Cañada Flintridge Business Directories available to give to those who are not members.  A third item that Pat had to offer was a schedule of events over Memorial Day weekend for the Fiesta Days

Bachy Bachmeyer reminded everyone to contribute to the Children’s Hospital by placing a donation in the cans in the center of the table

Jim Ackland announced that he is trying to fill Nick Berkuta’s shoes (is that really possible?) this year by soliciting ads for the Soap Box Derby’s program book.  All members should think of placing a business card ad for $50 to cheer them on

Jim

Mary Gant once again encouraged Kiwanians to participate in the ‘Project Child Save’ annual Golf Tournament to be held on May 21 at the LCF Country Club; non golfers may just opt to support this worthy cause by going to the dinner.  Mary told of an opportunity for non-profit organizations to make money at the SBD by taking a spot at Crestview School’s parking lot and selling items which will benefit their organization.

Diane DellaValle said the next Interclub will be Thursday, April 19th at LCHS with the Key Club at 12:10; this is an easy one to go to as it’s close-by and a short meeting.  Diane passed around a sign-up sheet.

Dr. Frosty gave his SLA report on the Sick, Lame and Ailing in our club.  Dick DeGrey would like to hear from anyone, he enjoys phone calls.  The Ragazzis seem to either stay busy or don’t hear their message machine.  Lloyd Welch seems to be doing better with his eye problems but enjoys receiving cards.  Hal Thomas likes phone calls and is now residing in a nice room in the retirement/care facility that he and Julia are now living in.  Julia has to have 24 hour care so is in a room on another floor.

Dr. Frosty Boyd

Carl Christensen reminded us that Ted Ashby of the Eagle Rock club will present a very interesting program next week on the ‘Pony Express.’

SPECIAL PRESENTATION Clyde Hemphill on behalf of the LCF Tournament of Roses presented a ‘Fine Job Award’ as a thank you for all that our club does for the Tournament.

THE PROGRAM was presented by Lyn Hoeft on the ‘Romanian Vision Mission.’  The Sojourners group of the Hoeft’s church has been going almost annually to Romania.  Dr. Wayne and Lyn Hoeft decided to join the mission trip so they could use their talents.  Wayne is a practicing optometrist in Glendale and Lyn got her Master’s in ‘Special Ed for the Blind.’ A member of their church organization who is an M.D. and a Romanian began going back to help his fellow countrymen following the fall of the oppressive dictator.  The country remains sad and drab as the people struggle to come out of that era and into freedom and democracy.  The Hoelft’s church has donated over 700 hundred pairs of glasses and the Foster Grant company has stepped in to add to these.  All the glasses are inspected, identified as to prescription, repaired, cleaned, and bagged with identification so they can be given out after the patients are examined.  Obviously the prescriptive glasses are not necessarily the ‘correct prescriptions’ but they do improve the vision of the person who receives them.  In addition to the Hoeft’s visual assistance, there is the medical doctor and his son who is an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor and their services are also given to these poor country folk.  All of these services are offered to the countryside residents, they do not go into the cities.  Large print bibles that are donated by their church are also given out.  We learned a lot about the Romanian people, the country, the size of the country and the history.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS:  A Sad buck was given by Clyde Hemphill for the sad/bad statement made about the Rutgers’s women’s basketball team from a radio host.
