The Prez sez . . .

Prez Steve stated that we were
honored to have as our guests today the Tournament of Roses
Queen and her Royal Court, accompanied by three three officials
from the Tournament, all of whom we would be meeting later in
the meeting.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Carl Christensen announced the next
two programs, Habitat for Humanity, scheduled for February 21,
and Stress Reduction, on February 28. Diane asked for
more people to sign up for the next Interclub, to be held with
Eagle Rock Kiwanis on Ash Wednesday, February 21, at Columbo’s
Restaurant, at 6:30pm, reminding everyone that this meeting is
an opportunity for members who have a difficult time getting
away during the day to meet their obligation of attending one
interclub meeting in each Kiwanis year. Diane also announced
that she has International Kiwanis Convention registration forms
for anyone who is planning to go to San Antonio July 2 -7, 2007,
and that everyone who registers before April 14 will save $50.
Bachy reminded everyone to put their donations to the Children’s
Hospital into the cans on the tables, and President Steve
helped him by illustrating exactly which cans are at issue, and
exactly how to insert money into those cans. On behalf of the
LCF Chamber of Commerce, Executive Director Pat Anderson
reminded everyone of the Valentine’s Mixer slated for Thursday,
February 15, hosted by Berkshire Travel, Countrywide , Apple
Cart, La Cañada Union 76, and La Cañada Imports, 5:30pm to
8:00pm. Frosty gave the Sick, Lame and Ailing report,
including a reminder to everyone to call Dick DeGray. He was
happy to see Connie Moulton, and said that Lloyd Welch
is still suffering with his detached retina and low blood
pressure.
THE PROGRAM
Carl Christensen introduced Scott Williams, Tournament
of Roses honored guest, who in turn said a few words about
the process the young women go through. Over 1100 applicants
from the Pasadena area registered for the tryouts for the 89th
Rose Queen. The areas of judging include public speaking
ability, poise, academic achievement, and community
involvement. He said these very accomplished young women will
have attended over 150 community and media events by the end of
their term. Scott introduced Amit Patel, in charge of
the T of R Veterans Hospital event, and Rick Nassif,
The T of R Official Scheduler. He then introduced the first
princess, who came to the podium and shared a bit of her
personal story before introducing the next princess, and so on.
One princess, Blair Ramirez, was unable to attend, and
another princess shared Blair’s story with us. Those present
were:
Christina Barsamian, 17, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy
Aneesah Giroux, 17, John Marshall Fundamental High School
Sue Park, 17, La Cañada High School
Kaitlin Terpstra-Sweeney, 18, Pasadena City College
Danielle Vine, 17, Pasadena High School
And Queen Mary McCluggage, 18, Flintridge Prep.

President Steve, Rose Queen and Rose Court
One of the La Cañada princesses acknowledged the La Cañada
Flintridge community in general for our support of the Queen and
her Royal Court, and Harriet Hammons specifically, for holding
up a sign on parade day that said “We love our La Cañada
Girls”. Maybe that’s why Queen Mary and her family are moving
to La Cañada from Pasadena?
In honor of the Queen and her Royal Court, Patsy Christiansen
decorated each table with a centerpiece, a bowl of candy
hearts with Valentine messages, red & silver candy Kisses, and
children’s valentines. Thank you Patsy! It was absolutely
enchanting!
HAPPY & SAD
BUCKS
Margaret Plotke, a member of
Hollywood-Los Feliz Kiwanis, gave a happy buck to be visiting
her second favorite Kiwanis Club, La Cañada Kiwanis.
Carol Liu have a happy $5
bucks to honor her husband’s recent 69th birthday.

Sheila Cook, a member of La Cañada
Kiwanis AM and former member of noon, gave a happy buck to see
so many of her friends in our meeting.

Patsy Christiansen gave a happy
bucki to see Connie Moulton feeling better and attending our
meeting.

Ed Moulton gave a happy buck to have his
wife Connie feeling better and in attendance.

Pat Anderson gave some happy bucks
because the L.A. County Fire Dept. invited her to suit up and
show up to help them fight the burning house fire last
Saturday. She didn’t think it would be too difficult since she
puts fires out all week long, week in and week out. She was
also happy that this exercise allowed new firemen to obtain
valuable experience in fighting fires that didn’t involve the
usual loss of property, as it was a training exercise.

Harriet gave two happy bucks for
having the Queen and her Royal Court with us, and another two
happy bucks for everyone who attended the Mid-Winter
Conference-South in Ontario last Saturday.
