The Prez sez . . .

President Steve announced that the Board Meeting has been
rescheduled for Thursday, February 15, due to a Citibank room
scheduling snafu, and reminded directors and chairman to
complete their monthly reports and get them to Bill Scherkey
before the meeting.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Diane DellaValle reminded everyone that they can still
sign up for the Mid-Winter Conference on Saturday, February 10.
Car pool leaves Descanso Gardens' parking lot at 8:00am for
Ontario, returning around 5:00pm.
She also announced our next Interclub, which will be with Eagle
Rock on February21.
Harriet Hammons, Chairman of our Literacy Program,
explained for new members that we have our speakers sign
children’s books as part of our Literacy Program, and then they
are eventually given to children at Lincoln Elementary who are
awesome readers as reward for excelling in our program. She
asked that some of our members join her and Linda Magarian
when they make the trip to present the books.
Carl Christensen announced the next two programs as
listed above. Both programs are extraordinary, and both
guest-worthy events. He reminded everyone to
e remHbe sure to let Clyde
Hemphill know how many guests we are bringing by the Monday
before the meeting if possible.
Bachy Bachmayer reminded us all to put our coins and
dollars into the cans on our tables to support the Children’s
Hospital of Los Angeles.
Frosty Boyd said that Dick DeGrey, who has been a
member of our club for many years, needs to hear from us, but
only after 11:00am. Shirley is about the same. He could not
report on Frank and Violet Ragazzi because
he has been unable to reach them. He reiterated that Lloyd Welch
had suffered a detached retina and a low blood pressure
condition, and asked everyone to be sure to keep him aware of
any members who are SICK, LAME, OR AILING.
THE PROGRAM
Carl Christensen introduced Dave Hemstreet, our
guest speaker and a member of La Cañada AM Kiwanis. Dave is
Director for the Kiwanis Family House for Division 3, and will
be visiting each club in the Division with this
presentation...

Dave Hemstreet
Located in Sacramento and very much like the famous Ronald
McDonald House, the Kiwanis Family House provides temporary
housing to the families of children who are being treated for
cancer and serious injury at the nearby UC Davis Medical Center.
These families are in desperate need to near their sick
children, and Kiwanis Family House makes this possible. Patients
from all over the United States as well as other countries, go
to this fine facility for treatment. The original Kiwanis Family
House, built from Construction trailers, was completed in 1984.
It welcomed over 12,000 families and was in use for 22 years.
Even with the Ronald McDonald House in the same area, many
families had to be turned away, creating an urgent need for a
larger facility.
Dave showed slides of the new $4.6 million dollar
facility that can now accommodate 37 families instead of the
original 13. The new facility took four years to complete, and
opened on July 23, 2006, on the 22nd anniversary of
the original facility. It is situated on the grounds of UCD with
a $1 per year ground lease in place. It is served by Kiwanian
volunteers 24/7.
In addition to the individual private areas which consist of
four sections each having 8 bedrooms and baths, one kitchen with
eight individual refrigerators, and one dining area, there is
a common pantry for families who need food and a clothes closet
for people who need temporary clothing. Most of these items are
replaced by the families. There are seven RV sites with
hook-ups increasing the original four sites by three. There is
a laundry room with three washers and driers. The facility
provides two conference/reading rooms for families who need
privacy in conversations with clergy, etc., a children’s play
room with books and videos, an office with a computer for
volunteer services, and office for VIP’s who are fund raising,
and two breezeways, or atriums with outside tables and chairs, a
barbeque and a picnic area. It is equipped with a
state-of-the-art heating and cooling system that operates with
hot water.
This important project needs the support of all Kiwanis clubs.
There is a 3.5 million dollar loan that needs to be retired, as
well as ongoing operating expenses. Families who can afford it
pay $40/day during their stay. About 1/3 of the families can do
that. The second third pay somewhere between $5 and $35 per
night, and the last third pay nothing. The House received a
$25,000 Grant from Kiwanis International, but so far a grant has
not been received from CalNevHa. The La Cañada AM Kiwanis has
become the first official sponsor for the House in Southern
California. This commitment involves a $500 initial donation,
payable over two years, and a $100 donation per year thereafter
along with either the allocation of a portion of an existing
fund raiser or the creation of a new fund raiser for the Family
House. Also available to individual Kiwanians are memoriam
bricks for $100 each. They include three lines of print and are
permanently placed in one of the breezeways. They can simply
contain the name of the donor, or a tribute to a loved one. For
more information, go to
kiwanisfamilyhouse.org.
HAPPY & SAD BUCKS
Numerous people paid to talk about their favorite teams.
Mary Gant. was
happy that the house burning went OK even though it was late.

Daryal was happy that he came from Dinuba, using a
newspaper to illustrate his joy.
.
Paul
Westmoreland, who also hails from Dinuba, announced that he
was happy it had achieved city hood in 1906, making it 100 years
old last year.
Dave
Spence was happy about something that your truly couldn’t
hear and I’m pretty sure that Mark Alexander was happy
about something as well.
