The Prez sez . . .
Thanks
again to Tom Burroughs who entertains us before the
meeting each week with his wonderful piano music. We missed
Ed Moulton, but Prez Steve Hagerty asked Jack
Dawson to get us on our feet, and Jack did a great
job leading God Bless America while Tom
Burroughs kept us on time and a little "in tune' as he
accompanied on the piano. Ken Lowe led the flag salute
and Frosty Boyd gave the invocation.
TERRIFIC KIDS

Pat Flynn and his Terrific Kids
Pat
Flynn did a great job introducing four Terrific Kids from La Caņada Elementary School and their Terrific Parents.

Pat Flynn
Amy
Young is a member of the La Caņada Elementary School Student
Council. She enjoys working with and helping her fellow
students and loves spending time with her dog "Sadie." Her
favorite school subject is English. She likes writing and
drawing. Amy is active in sports and is on the Spartan
Basketball Travel Team. She also plays soccer with the AYSO.
Amy was joined by her mom; her parents are James and
Joy Young.
Elizabeth Weinlein came with her parents, Eric and
Jill Weinlein. Elizabeth is an assistant tutor and
works with the first graders several times a week. She helps
them with their reading and their arithmetic. Elizabeth
enjoys singing and is a member of the school choir. She plays
on the AYSO All Star team and is a short stop on her LCJB
Association baseball team.
Ryan
Kim came with his proud grandparents and his mom. His
parents are Scott and Susie Kim. Ryan
enjoys helping his classmates and working with his teachers.
His favorite subject is science. He plays the oboe and is a
member of the La Caņada Elementary School Concert Band. Ryan
plays golf and is a member of the Southern California Junior
PGA. Ryan is a member of the LCES Year Book Staff.
Grant
Owen was accompanied by his parents, Matt and
Leslie Owen, Grant is a member of the La Caņada
Elementary School Student Council. He is a Boy Scout and has
already earned eight merit badges. Grant enjoys
volunteering, working with his teachers and assisting his fellow
classmates in their school studies. Grant is a member of
the Spartan Basketball Travel Team and a member of the La Caņada
Junior Baseball Travel Team.
COMMITTEE REPORT
The
Prez asked Melinda Thompson to describe the process
for publishing the bulletin each week. As with many other
Kiwanis tasks, the bulletin wouldn't "happen" every week without
the dedication of a whole group of volunteers.

Melinda Thompson
It all
starts with taking notes at the lunch meeting and then writing
the bulletin. Bill Watts, Mary Gant and Bob
Martin are the most frequent (but not the only) volunteers
who step in to help Melinda get the bulletin written.
It's great to have a variety of writing styles, observations and
viewpoints. Our bulletin is posted to the website by our
webmaster, Jeb Long. He does a great job. No matter
where he is in the world - working or on vacation - he gets the
job done promptly every week. Often Jeb has the bulletin
on the website within a few hours of receiving the written
copy. Jeb enhances the written copy by adding any
photographs that are emailed to him by members and/or that he
has taken himself. Diane DellaValle is very good about
taking pictures, and a few other members also bring their
cameras from time to time. Anyone who enjoys taking pictures or
is just willing to help out is welcome to join in. Contact
Jeb, Diane or Melinda for more info ... or
just start taking pictures and forward them to Jeb via
email. It's pretty simple! For those who like to be notified
each week when the bulletin has been posted to the website,
Jeb sends out a notice by email. Contact Jeb if you
aren't receiving the email notice. Jeb has recently
added a very nice feature to the website. There is now a button
at the top of the bulletin that allows you to print out a copy
without pictures. It is usually just three pages long. You can
also print out the website version with the pictures. For those
few members who do not have access to email, we mail out a
printed version of the bulletin if requested; the cost is
$30/year. Contact Melinda or Jeb if you want to
be added to the mailing list.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mike
Leininger thanked all who helped Feed the Floaters; over 100
people working on the float were served dinner by our Club.
Mike also thanked those who helped hang the lights in
Glenola Park. He was looking for volunteers to help take the
lights down on Friday at 9 a.m. (Rain will cancel.)
Diane
DellaValle announced an interclub with Thursday (the 11th)
at noon.
Frosty Boyd gave his SLA report. Lloyd Welch is
really struggling due to a detached retina and cataract. Cards
and written communications would be very appreciated!
Bachy
Bachmayer encouraged donations for Children's Hospital.
THE PROGRAM
Carl
Christensen hardly needed to introduce emergency management
expert
April
Kelcy, as most of us have met her at Chamber events or other
activities around town. She was a great speaker and made us
appreciate the possible severity of a future earthquake and how
we could be personally affected. She discussed some current
earthquake myths and impressed us with statistics about our risk
in an earthquake or other future disaster. April's
display table was surrounded after the meeting as members were
getting information about emergency supplies, consultations to
develop an emergency plan for your own home, and training for
all types of emergency management.
HAPPY & SAD BUCKS
E llie
Wildermuth didn't want us to think she was just hanging her
head last week and claimed she had the flu. Ellie was
very gracious and had a Happy Buck for Rutgers,
another Happy Buck for USC, a third for Texas, and
a fourth for Auburn. Even though Ohio lost, she thought the
team's exceptional year still deserved a Century Club of
Happy Bucks.
Tom
Burroughs had twenty Happy Bucks for his
cardinal and gold team and for all the great school bands
marching in the Rose Parade.
Pat
Anderson had a Happy Buck because (per the
latest update given to the Chamber) construction will be
starting on the new Town Center in two weeks.
Paul
Westmoreland had a Happy Buck for Ellie
because she is such a great supporter
of our club.
Sheree
Ingram had a Challenge Buck 'cause she
attended the Board meeting last week and not a single Board
Member was wearing their Kiwanis pin. Full of remorse, those
same members each coughed up a Buck of Shame.
Clyde
Hemphill was gone for two weeks and had a Happy Buck
to be back, He was also Happy and
Grateful for all the trolls who helped him under the
bridge while our float was being built.
Jim
Reynolds had a Happy Buck for Auborn.

Al Restivo brought his
new staff intern who just graduated from Azusa
Pacific College.

Prez Steve collects fines for lack of Kiwanis pins almost
every week.
