The Prez sez . . .
•
Prez Steve thanked Diane DellaValle for filling
for him last week
•
Everyone was reminded of the Board meeting tomorrow night, 7:00
p.m. at CitiBank , providing Prez Steve remembers to get
the key! With key the meeting will be in the Board Room,
without the key the meeting will be in the parking lot.
• Steve
called everyone’s attention to the fact that a USC banner
was on display and thought it was a personal insult to Lt.
Gov Daryal and his family. Thanks went to Past President
Paul Westmoreland for this addition.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Diane
DellaValle stated that a sign-up sheet had been circulated
for an Interclub with the Highland Park club on Thursday,
January 11 at noon and no one had signed up. (Her whining paid
off because she then got 2 plus herself and the Prez,
anyone else can call her on her cell phone 818.517.1119 and join
them.
Carl
Christensen announced that next week April Kelcy will speak
to us on ‘Emergency Preparedness’ and the following week we will
hear about the ‘Mountain Lion Foundation.’
Frosty’s SLA comments were that Dick DeGrey is
staying close to his dear Shirley. The Regazzis
must be o.k. because they are never home to answer their
phone. Frosty noted that it was nice to have Ed
Moulton in attendance which means that Connie is
probably doing well and welcomed Tom Gilfoy back after
his ‘incident.’ Lloyd Welch has had surgery for a
detached retina in his eye and it is not healing well. Bill
Scherkey is still ill but on New Year’s Day he was admitted
to Emergency for a nose bleed, fortunately there was a
television in his room and he and Melinda were able to
see the Rose Bowl game so all was not lost.
THE PROGRAM
-
Carl Christensen
introduced Joel
Peterson
to speak to us on “Investment Banking Demystified’
Joel
thanked the club for inviting him but was convinced the reason
for him being today’s speaker was that Carl hadn’t been able to
get anyone else. We know that was not true, Uh uh.
Joel
gave an outstanding talk and pointed out that in Southern
California there were few Fortune 500 companies that most who
sought out these services were small companies whose heirs had
gone into other businesses and were not interested in carrying
on ‘the family business.’ Joel then gave 10 steps required for
the disposal of these companies for the seller to be
successful. They are: Business Valuation; Advisor Selection;
Definition of Success; Project Timeline; Information
Organization; Buyer Identification;
Confidentiality/Communication Plan; Key Transaction Elements;
and, Role of an Effective Advisor. Each step was elaborated on
and each was informative. A question and answer period followed
until the Prez pointed out that time was up. Joel
was presented with a Kiwanis mug and a promise of a book from
Harriet in the near future for Joel to sign.
It was
noted that to keep members awake during the presentation, since
the lights were dimmed, that the thermostat was set to 50° or
lower.
HAPPY & SAD BUCKS
Ed
Moulton had a Happy Buck for Nick Berkuta who
has so frequently and happily given Ed a ride back to
Pasadena after our meetings since Ed no longer drives.
Tom
Gilfoy had Happy, Sad, and Happy Bucks. The
first Happy was for the quick response of the paramedics
who ‘brought him back’ after passing out and suffering what
would have been a fatal heart attack. The Sad one was
that “once on the other side” he saw Vestal Virgins coming to
meet him but; Wham! Tom was brought back to the side of
the living so that was his last Happy Buck.
Ken
Lowe gave a Happy one for the comments by a Key
Club member who reported that the Kiwanis December 20
meeting was one of the best Kiwanis meeting she had ever
attended. She loved the enthusiasm of our members while singing
carols and just looking forward to the holidays.
Paul
Westmoreland gave 5 Happy $’s for USC’s Rose Bowl
win; Sad for the Lt. Gov whose UCLA team reverted
back to their non-winning ways in their Bowl game.
Mary
Gant gave a Happy one for Clyde Hemphill who
was Site Chairman for the LCF TofRA this year, he did an
outstanding job.
Joan
Peters was Happy about volunteering with ‘Volunteers
of America’ to help serve the homeless of Glendale. Joan
was very impressed with this organization and how they quietly
go about their ‘job’ week after week.
Jim
Reynolds gave $10 Happy ones for Auburn winning the
Cotton Bowl
FACTS AND FICTION
Music: piano tunes by Ed Moulton because Tom
Burrows was away enjoying the company of his Fraternity
brothers from USC; and Jack Dawson leading us in
song.
Opening:
flag salute by Gigi
Schleuter
and the inspirational was given by
Joel Smith
Guests: None
Master of the Cash Box: Jack Dawson,
a very busy member today.
Birthdays & Anniversaries: We were on the ‘honor system’
today because the Prez had failed to look them up. Either there
were none or no one decided to ‘fess up.
Fines: To begin the meeting President Steve asked
Past President Pat Anderson for her assistance. Seems
the Prez felt that Pat had been at a recent
‘Kiwanis Fund Raiser.’ It was pointed out to our President
that it was actually the LCF Chamber of Commerce’s Board
Elections. The club was informed that it was about
to become a Kiwanis Fund Raiser. After much consideration
ex-Prez Pat pointed out that the newspaper photos of the
Kiwanians in attendance who wore club pins vs the un-pinned. If
your photo was in both papers that resulted in two fines; the
pin wearers were: Bill Watts, Bill Scherkey,
perhaps Nick Berkuta but because of his height the photo
was above his pin, and Lt. Gov Daryal Gant. The
fined were Linda Magarian (twice), Patsy Christianson,
Gigi Schleuter, Diane DellaValle, Mark Alexander
(not in attendance so he owes), Joel Peterson, Mary Gant
(twice) and ex-Prez Pat confessed that she did not have
hers on that evening. Yep, it was a Kiwanis Fund Raiser
alright.
Frosty Challenge: Bill Watts won with a story about
squirrels in churches and a Temple.
Secret Greeter: Diane DellaValle
Winner of the Fifty-Fifty Drawing: Tom Gilfoy
This
Week's Guest Editor: Mary Gant
