The Prez sez . . .
Prez
Steve Hagerty
drew a lot of stares as he started the meeting wearing a big
shark hat. He conducted more than half the meeting before we
learned that our Division 3 Key Clubs call themselves the "Sharkies,"
and these "hats" are for sale (as well as "Sharky" T-shirts) as
a Division 3 fund raiser.
The Prez welcomed back Ellie
Wildermuth and Al Restivo who have been missing for a
few weeks. Steve claimed he had been waiting to ask
Al about his picture in the local newspapers on several
occasions recently. Steve agreed Al was wearing
something in his lapel but thought it was way too big to be a
Kiwanis pin. However, Al stuck to his claim that he was
indeed wearing his Kiwanis pin. The Prez wasn't able to
extract any fine from Mr. Republican.
Since there were no birthdays or
anniversaries, Prez Steve asked Frosty if he was
ready to start a Frosty challenge. Frosty is
always ready for a good story and started the challenge with a
tale about a minister entering the pearly gates. Most of us
couldn't hear the punch line, but it must have been a good one
based on the laughter at Frosty's table. Linda, a
brown-haired guest from the Pasadena Kiwanis Club, had a good
dumb blonde joke. However, Bill Watts' PG-13/R rated
joke about free sex brought down the house.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Frank from the Pasadena Kiwanis Club
brought us information about this year's annual luncheon for the
Kiwanis International President that is hosted every year by the
Pasadena Club. This year the International President is our
very own Nelson Tucker from the San Fernando Valley. If
you haven't heard Nelson speak, you are in for a treat.
A really dynamic guy! Several changes this year: the date is
on Saturday (rather than a weekday), December 30, and the
location has been changed from the Pasadena Hilton to the
Pasadena University Club. Put the date on your calendar now;
sign-ups will be through our Club in a week or two. All Club
members are encouraged to attend. (This luncheon qualifies as a
InterClub.) In the evening there is an opportunity to have
dinner and see the Kiwanis Rose Parade float and several other
floats being assembled in the same building.
The LCF Chamber of Commerce Holiday Party
will be at Oakmont Country Club on December 14 starting at
6:00 p.m. Pat Anderson thanked Bill and
Melinda for already making a reservation and encouraged more
members to call the Chamber and make a reservation.
The LCF annual Festival of Lights will
be on December 7th this year. In addition to snow and reindeer,
this year there will be a baby giraffe for the children, too.
There will be some great prizes donated by local businesses. To
qualify, bring five receipts for purchases in LCF between
November 24 and December 6. Pat reminded us to support
our local businesses and keep the sales tax here in LCF.
Jack Dawson held up a big Christmas
collection box provided by the La Cañada Cadette Girl Scout
Troop 724. The Cadettes are collecting tooth brushes, tooth
paste, dental floss and mouthwash to be donated to
Young and Healthy of Pasadena. This organization provides free
dental care to low income families, and the girls are
coordinating this collection and donation as part of the
requirements to earn their Silver Award. Bring your donation of
items or cash next week to participate in this worthwhile
endeavor by our leaders of tomorrow.
Harriet Hammons reported on a $500
donation to the Bulgarian Orphanage by the International
Understanding committee of our La Cañada Kiwanis Foundation.
She also reminded anyone who hasn't yet signed up for the
Holiday Party on December 10 to do so ASAP.
Carl Christensen highlighted two
upcoming Wednesday programs. (See above.) Next week would be a
great day to bring a guest - someone who would be interested in
an Update on Descanso by the Executive Director of the
Gardens.
Bachy Bachmayer reminded us to
remember Children's Hospital as we give thanks for our many
personal blessings.
Clyde Hemphill needs three or four
more volunteers to help hang the tree lights in Glenola Park
next Thursday morning. Many hands make light work.
Frosty had an SLA update on Connie
Moulton who celebrated her birthday last week. Apparently
she is not recuperating very well and Ed really suffers
as he tries to help her in every way possible.
GUESTS
Paul Westmoreland introduced Ludwig;
he didn't sign the guest list so we don't have his last name.
However, Ludwig has known Al Restivo for many
years; Ludwig told us he used to be a Democrat but now he
is a Republican.
Fred Schooley brought his wife,
Linda, again. What a pleasure to have her visit so
frequently. (Maybe we can get her to join, too!?!)
Harriet Hammons introduced Betty
Ford, the InterClub Chair of the Pasadena Kiwanis Club.
Betty was actually a friend of Harriet's mom, and
Harriet was delighted she was finally able to meet Betty
in person. Betty introduced the other four members
joining us today from her Pasadena Club.
Daryal Gant introduced Frazer
Draper from the AM Club.
Ken Lowe gave the mike to Julie Yu
who is the Attendance Officer of the LCHS Key Club.
Julie told us a little bit more about the Key Club Spirit
Competition at Magic Mountain that Ken briefed us on last
week.
THE PROGRAM
It only took Rody Stephenson a half
hour to convince most of us we want to see the current opera
production of Hansel and Gretel at the Dorothy
Chandler Pavilion. There are seven performances between now and
December 17 including three matinees.
Rody explained that Hansel and
Gretel is an opera that appeals to all ages. The opera
is somewhat different than the story most of us remember and has
many redeeming themes. Children are enthralled with the
delightful folk songs, identify with Hansel and Gretel - who
goof off and get into trouble, and delight in the way the
children outwit the witch. Rody took his five year old
granddaughter, and she loved this opera.
This is the only significant piece of music
written by the composer. His sister was putting on puppet shows
and wanted him to write music for four folk songs; this evolved
into the opera, which was a hit from the very beginning. The
composer was born in 1854 and is not the same Engelbert
Humperdinck we are familiar with. Rody played several
video snippets from the opera for us, and that really whetted
our appetite.
The Los Angeles Children's Chorus is in the
last scene of the opera and the children are the gingerbread
kids baked by the witch and rescued by Hansel and Gretel. There
are several La Cañada Flintridge youngsters in the L.A.
Children's Chorus. The L.A. Opera company has flourished under
the leadership of Placido Domingo and is considered one of the
top five in the U.S. In spite of that prestige, Rody
assured us good seats can be purchased for under $50 and
children are half price.
HAPPY & SAD BUCKS
Ellie Wildermuth was thrilled that
Ohio State was #1 in the nation and had a Happy Buck
because while she was away - out on the ocean for three days
- Kiwanis friends kept her informed of the status of Ohio State.
A Sad Buck from Pat Anderson
for the farewell to Anthony Portantino on Monday
night at the LCF City Council meeting. She had a Cautious
Republican Buck hoping that Democrat Anthony
would be a good representative in the State Assembly for the
Republicans as well as the Democrats.
Clyde Hemphill was sure Mary Gant
must have cheered for Rutgers (he told her not to) and
caused the weekend loss. That was his Sad Buck.
Clyde had a Happy/Funny Buck because a
streetwalker who tried to pick him up in Las Vegas called him a
"lucky guy" when he pointed out to her that he was in the
company of three women already. I guess he didn't tell her they
were all relatives.
Al Resitvo thought it was worth a
Happy Buck that his students voted against having
classes today.
The Doo Dah Parade was a big education for
Glen Pettit. He had a Happy Buck because
there are still a lot of things for him to learn in this world.
Paul Westmoreland had a Sad Buck
for Rutgers and a Happy Buck for USC.
Daryal Gant's Sad Buck was for
Mary Gant who was accused by Clyde of cheering for
Rutgers when she didn't!
Linda Schooley had a Sad Buck
that Cal lost to USC.
