The Prez sez . . .
Prez
Steve Hagerty introduced a La Cañada troop of eighth grade
Girl Scouts as we were beginning lunch. These vivacious
gals are collecting dental supplies for needy kids in the
Glendale area and had a cute presentation. They asked us to
look through our cupboards and drawers for new toothbrushes,
floss, toothpaste, etc. Some of us may even know a dentist or
pharmacy owner who could help. Jack Dawson offered to be
in charge a collection box at next week's Wednesday lunch
meeting, so be sure to look for any of these items and bring
them to the meeting.
The
Prez welcomed recently installed members, Sheere Ingram
and Norm Johnson and welcomed back members Jim
Edwards, Paul Bobzen, Hal Thomas and Joel
Peterson. The Prez said he had been waiting for
Joel to show up, as they needed to talk about a picture in
the paper that included Joel, Steve, Daryal
and Clyde. Apparently Joel was not wearing his
Kiwanis pin, and Steve was ready to assess a fine.
The Prez tried to get Joel's admission and asked him
what was different about the picture. Joel - always
quick on his feet - said it was about thirty years. That
brought down the house, but Joel still had to pay a fine!
ANNOUNCEMENTS
All
members need to review their personal info page in our
Club directory (little blue binder) for accuracy. All
additions and corrections should be sent to Bob Wallace;
he is working on the annual update.
Our
Holiday Party is scheduled for December 10th. Harriet
Hammons encouraged us to be sure we have officially signed
up to attend. The LCHS Chamber Singers will be entertaining us
again; they were fabulous last year! Don't miss the fun!!!
The
Verdugo Hills Boy Scout Council has a big golf tournament
fund raiser on December 4th. Contact Harriet if you are
interested.
Our Club
will be installing the Holiday lights in Glenola Park on
November 30, 8 a.m. to noon. Contact Mike Leininger if
you can help that day. The lighting ceremony will be held the
evening of December 6.
Anthony Portantino's last LCF city council meeting will be
November 20th. Pat Anderson advised there will not be
much city business as the evening will include an Anthony
"roast" and other activities to honor Anthony's tenure on
the city council. December 4th is the day Anthony will
be in Sacramento to be sworn in as our 44th District
representative.
The
Children's Hospital tubs were brought to our attention again
by Bachy Bachmeyer.
Frosty Boyd's SLA report included news on Connie Moulton
- who is still recovering from her fall, and Patsy
Christensen - who is recovering from an infection.
TERRIFIC KIDS
Five
sixth graders from Palm Crest Elementary School joined us for
lunch and special recognition as Terrific Kids! These
students were selected by their teachers for their outstanding
citizenship. Pat Flynn made the introductions, and it
was delightful to hear what these sixth graders are doing
.
Jennifer
Kim enjoys sports and music. Last spring she won first
place in a golf tournament. Jennifer plays the violin
and is hoping to join the school orchestra this year.
Jennifer is in the Gate program at Palm Crest, and her
favorite subjects are math and English. Jennifer was
accompanied by her mom, Sunhee Kim. Her teacher at Palm
Crest is Mrs. Jane Chang-Hur
.
Chase
Borisoff is a member of the Student Counsel. His favorite
subjects are English (he especially enjoys writing) and social
studies. Chase is a member of the swim team at the YMCA
and also plays water polo at LCHS. Chase's mom,
Kristi Borisoff, was with him. His teacher at Palm Crest is
Mrs. Jane Chang-Hur.

Savannah
Hart enjoys acting, singing, dancing (both ballet and jazz)
and music. In addition to playing the
viola and the flute, Savannah is also a member of the
Chorusters and on the school newspaper staff. Her favorite
subjects are writing and English. Savannah was
accompanied by her mom, Cozette Hart. Her teacher at
Palm Crest is Mrs. Judi Healey.
Noah
Bernstein came with his dad, Dennis Bernstein.
Noah is very active in the youth groups at the Church of
Latter Day Saints. He is also a golfer. His teacher, Mrs.
Judi Healey, says Noah is a peace maker at school and
is good at helping fellow students settle disagreements in a
positive way. Noah has a brother and two older sisters,
so there is always a lot going on at home.
Orion
Burl is in the Gate program at Palm Crest, and his
favorite subjects are English and
math. He is also a member of the Chess Club and enjoys playing
volleyball. Orion spends his spare time working on
robotics projects. Orion's mother, Maureen Burl,
accompanied him. His teacher is Ms. Sue Carr.
THE PROGRAM
Harriet Hammons was filling in for Carl Christensen
and introduced the three new members who gave their Craft Talks.
Gigi
Schlueter was born in San Francisco in 1955 but was adopted
at birth and has lived in La Cañada
her entire life. She attended the local schools including PCC.
She worked as a nurse practitioner for many years. When she and
Jim were married a year ago, Jim asked Gigi
what she wanted to do when she "grew up." The dream of having
her own business became a reality in August when she opened her
own skin care salon, Allure, in La Crescenta. Gigi
loves still living in the same house in which she grew up.
Gigi's final Craft Talk teaser was the news that she has
been a practicing magician and member of the Magic Castle for
more than twenty years.
Diane
Landrum was born in Los Angeles, but her parents moved to
Washington when she was in grade school. Diane attended
the University of Washington as a zoology major. Diane
met John at the U of W and they were married in 1951.
After a few years they came to California and moved back and
forth between southern California and the bay area. In 1976
Diane started working for Pete Palermo and just
retired this year. Diane is active in a number of local
organizations including CAP, the LCPC Chancel choir and the
Circle of Hope. Diane and John love to travel and
are looking forward to this new stage in their lives ... being
retired. They are still trying to figure out how to be
"retired."

John
Landrum claimed Diane told most of his story.
John was born in Stockton and is a
third generation Californian. He
graduated from college with a major in accounting and took his
first job with Standard Oil working in the mail room. John
moved on to Lockheed and then a number of other companies
working in the capacity of accountant, controller, and office
manager. He eventually moved out of government contract work
and really enjoyed his job as controller of an electronic
components firm. Since John retired he has become
involved with the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments and
does the accounting for this organization. The SGV Council of
Governments includes all the small cities in the San Gabriel
valley and acts as a body to influence funding of local projects
such as roads, etc.
HAPPY & SAD
BUCKS
Mary
Gant had several Happy Bucks for USC and
Berkley.
Paul
Westmoreland had Happy Bucks for USC, Rutgers,
and UCLA.
New
member, Sheere Ingram, celebrated with Happy Bucks
for the early but safe arrival of another grandchild.
It was
worth a Happy Buck to Ken Lowe that he
survived the Key Club trip to Magic Mountain with ten busloads
of Key Clubbers.
Pat
Anderson gave a Hopeful Go Bears Buck for Cal
and a Sad Buck for the meningitis outbreak at CVHS.
Tom
Burroughs had tears in his eyes and a Sad Buck
'cause he will be playing the piano for the Travel Adventure
audience during the USC football game.
Mike
Leininger gave his LAST FIVE Happy Bucks - all
he had left after his youngest daughter's wedding on Saturday.
Jim
Edwards primed the pot with ten Happy Bucks
and promised future Happy Bucks - one Buck
for each point difference in the USC/Cal game this
weekend.
Clyde
Hemphill knocked on wood with his Lucky Buck
for Rutgers.
Howard Backer thought it was worth a Happy Buck
that UCLA did what USC couldn't ... beat Oregon State.
Harriet Hammons honored vets Hal Thomas and Joel
Peterson (and all the other vets she didn't know) with her
first Happy Buck. Descanso volunteer Paul
McBride (in the entrance kiosk) was celebrating his 55th
wedding anniversary and Harriet gave a Happy Buck
for that, too. She had a Sad Buck for the
loss of Warren Hillgren.
