The Prez sez . . .
The
meeting opened a little early with a clang as the Prez said we
had a lot to do. Right away he called for announcements.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Clyde
Hemphill told us about the upcoming Holiday/Christmas party
to be held on December 10, from 5:30 to 9+? At the home
of Bill & Margaret Watts. $30 per head. A printed
invitation was handed out at the door to all who attended today
(even though it was in very small
print.). A sign up
sheet was sent around with the last date to sign up being
December 4.
Bachy
Bachmayer asked for bucks to be put in the tubs for the
Children’s Hospital
Carl
Christanson told of the next two weeks programs.
Anthony Portantino reminded us all to be sure an vote and
don’t forget his name
Frosty Boyd gave the SLA report and was happy that
Jean
Peters is doing well; Ed Moulton’s wife is doing
better but needs Ed around to help. (But Ed showed up late to
lead the rest of the singing)
GUESTS:
Bachy
Bachmayer introduced his daughter Elizabeth
Jeb
Long introduced his about to be new member Norm Johnson
Carl
Christensen brought 4 guests (all from JPL), Dennis Enari,
Michael & Lily Keeley, Phil Lingurger (couldn’t read his
handwriting) and Carl's wife Irene Christensen
Hi
Neighbor gave us all a change to express our frustrations by
banging the table
SECRET GREETER: Was Chuck Gulick
FINES & STUFF:
A buck
for no pins and missing the secret greeter, then on to
HAPPY & SAD BUCKS:
Elizabeth C. Georgeon a happy buck about her grandchildren
Paul

Jeb
Long Happy that the U of Texas is still winning (barely)
Mary
Gant –very sad for UCLA
Ed
Moulton – Happy his wife is improving
Norm
Johnson – $5 for being happy about joining Kiwanis
Howard Backer – (Coach) Sad for UCLA and expounding on how
they should have played the game
Nick
Berkuta gave a happy buck for Tom Slaughter who was
so busy he couldn’t attend today’s meeting and a sad buck
because Tom couldn’t attend the meeting (make sense)
THE RAFFLE: Won by Bill Watts who sells tickets
next week.
BIRTHDAY PARTY:
It was
Bachy Backmayer’s 90th Birthday and we
celebrated with a yummy carrot cake (Bachy’s favorite) and a
special Happy Birthday song. Bachy said he was now one
of the 4 horsemen of Kiwanis who are all 90 years old. He was
presented with a Birthday card signed by all
THE PROGRAM:
The
Prez introduced our program chairman Carl Christensen who
then turned it back to the Prez who introduced our speaker
Carl Christensen who then introduced Ty Ritter who
came to thank us for the $500 donation we gave his charity and
tell us that it was responsible for returning a stolen child.
Then it was Carl’s turn again. (I think that’s
how it worked)
Anyhow
Carl gave us a most interesting show & tell presentation
of The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in China.
Construction was officially started in 1997; it is now completed
and is the largest hydropower project ever built. It has a
double lane, 5 steps ship lock and it will protect over 15
million people from flood threat. It obviously is a major
tourist attraction and while Carl was there they were preparing
for the millionth visitor in 2006 who happened to be just 30
people ahead of Carl and there was a big celebration. The slides
were awesome and it is a magnificent structure and a fantastic
engineering achievement.

Carl Christensen
CLOSING:
“Hail
Kiwanis” was heard throughout the room.
