The Prez sez . . .

Prez Steve welcomed new member Michael Abounassar - You're in Kiwanis Now.

Michael Abounassar with Bob Wallace

Steve made special mention that Clyde Hemphill's alma mater, Rutgers University, is 5 - 0 for the season, and on the rise.  Clyde would be surprised if they could beat the Women's School of the Blind.  Better check them out Clyde.

We were treated to a Kiwanis Pin Passing ceremony La Caņada Kiwanis style!  The order was:  Clyde passed the Past President pin to Paul, Paul passed Presidents pin to Steve, Steve passed President Elect to Diane, Diane passed Vice President pin to Carl, John is on hold for the Treasurers pin, and Bill passed his Secretary pin from his left hand to his right hand.  Now that is efficiency!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ted Ashby, a member of the Eagle Rock Club, came to say a few words (really a lot of words about a lot of things) about the Kiwanis Key Leader Program for kids in grades 9 thru 12.  He outlined the Key Leader Program.  Groups of kids are taken on a three-day trip to a camp in the mountains where they participate in encounter sessions and exercises.  Ted is looking for donations to support the program.

Paul Westmoreland, on behalf or Flintridge Pharmacy, checked to see how many members were interested in having a nurse come to our meeting to give flu shots.  They need 40 to 50 people to cover expenses, and, by show of hands, there were only about 6 to 8 members interested.  Flintridge Pharmacy, CVS, and other locations will be giving flu shots at their locations, and interested members can pick a location that is convenient for them.

Paul auctioned off a gift certificate worth $75 for computer coaching and service performed by Tom Slaughter of Earth Oasis.  Nick Berkuta was the highest bidder on the certificate,

Pat Anderson introduced Patricia Futia of the Real Estate Exchange who will be host for the October 19, 2006 chamber mixer.  Margaritas and tacos will be served by Los Gringos Restaurant.

Clyde Hemphill  announced that our first Travel Adventure will be on October 14, 2006 at the Flintridge Prep Auditorium.  The title of the program is "Vietnam - Land of Surprises."   Tickets to members are being mailed this week.

Bachy Bachmayer reminded everyone to contribute to the Children's Hospital by putting your dollars and/or coins in the cans on the tables.

Diane DellaValle is off to a good start with Inter Clubs, and has the first one of the year scheduled for next Wednesday, October 11, 2006 with the La Caņada AM Club.  Breakfast is at 7 am, and the meeting starts at 7:30 am at the Lutheran Church of the Foothills.

Gigi Schlueter announced that there were three silent auction gifts that did not get any bidders.  If anyone is interested in placing a bid on any of the items, please contact her.

Carl Christensen announced that the program for next week will be presented by Chris Erskine, an LA Times writer.  He will be speaking on the "Man of the House."

Frosty Boyd, our SLA chair, announced that Dick DeGrey was doing ok and spends time taking care of wife Shirley.

THE PROGRAM

Our speaker, Richard Granados, was the 11th of 12 children.  He is a UCLA graduate, and joined Kiwanis in 1983 at age 25.  Richard has held many offices in Kiwanis and worked at all levels within the organization.

January 20, 2015 will mark the 100th Birthday of Kiwanis International, and the goal is to have one million members.   The members are the most important assets in Kiwanis, and the focus is on members.

Richard went on to review all of the resources available to build membership including press kits, training by Kiwanis International representatives who will be holding training sessions locally.  On January 20 a K University session will be held in Covina, CA.

Richard left us with a question - "What was the special moment that impressed you and convinced you to become a Member?"

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Ellie Wildermuth had a Happy Buck for the Ohio State University football team for their continued winning streak.

Pat Anderson had a Sad Buck for the City Counsel who's meeting did not adjourn until 12:28 am.  A Happy Buck for Cal Trans who gave the final approval of the plans to repair the wall on Foothill Blvd. across from the YMCA.  The project is out for bid and should be in work within 3 to 4 weeks.

Clyde Hemphill had a Sad Buck  - We need to have an orientation program for new members.

Howard Backer had a Happy Buck for the University of Missouri who is ranked #23 with a 5-0 record so far this season while Rutgers is ranked #24.
