The Prez sez . . .

“A life not lived for others is not a life.”  John Wooden

Prez Paul Westmoreland congratulated the Club on our very successful Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event on Sunday.  Everyone had a great time - even Ken Lowe until he made his "911 check out."  We were all glad to see Ken at the meeting today and to find out he was just suffering from a little too much sun, a little too little water, and low blood pressure.

The Prez reminded everyone that there will be no noon meeting next week.  Instead, the installation dinner will be held on Wednesday evening at Oakmont Country Club.

Prez Paul reminded us we will be "Dinuba Free" after next Wednesday.  He showed us a copy of the Dinuba Sentinel with an article about his nephew who just published his "100th Anniversary Pictorial Book of Dinuba."  He threatened us that if we aren't nice to him, he will make sure his nephew is invited to present one of our upcoming Wednesday programs.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Michael Streinfel and Larry Rivera from Flintridge Pharmacy announced that they will be back in two weeks to give flu shots to Club members, family members and close friends.  Apparently the flu has already started this year, which is unseasonably early.  These shots will be free to those covered by Medicare (unless covered by an HMO).  The shots are $30 for anyone else.  Flintridge Pharmacy will also offer flu shots on announced weekdays from 3-8 p.m. and on some Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Flintridge Pharmacy is located at 523 Foothill Blvd. next to the La Cañada Ralphs.

Joan Peters made an announcement for Hal Crockett, who is chairman of our International Understanding Committee.  We help provide bed kits for children around the world who live on the streets, and we received a great letter and other information from the Sleeping Children organization.  The information and letter will be on the back table for several weeks.

Daryal Gant and Joel Peterson told us there wouldn't be final numbers on the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event for several weeks, but it appeared to once again be a successful fundraiser.  It is evident we know how to put on a great event.  The challenge is to bring in more attendees next year.  The Educational Foundation was sincerely grateful to be included in the event and had a chance to "watch the best in action."

Howard Backer asked everyone to pay their Kiwanis Club bills promptly, as this is the time of year when we are always in a cash crunch in the Club account.  Our International Kiwanis dues must be paid in advance for an entire year at the end of September.

Bachy Bachmayer encouraged everyone to help fill the Children's Hospital tubs on the tables.

Mary Gant announced there are only eleven of the new straw Kiwanis Club hats left to purchase.  Only $20 each.

Pat Anderson recommended attending the LCF Chamber of Commerce's fundraiser Men About Town on October 6th.  Models include Kiwanians Joe Thompson and Joel Petersen, guest Michael Abounassar and 19 other distinguished gentlemen.

THE PROGRAM

It was Prez Paul's Swan Song, and he provided a good review of all our Club and Foundation accomplishments this past year.  Howard Backer received a Distinguished Service Award and special recognition from Prez Paul for his  always cheerful and devoted service as Treasurer.  Other members who were of special help to Prez Paul this year were also commended and received Thank You gifts.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Mary Gant had twenty Happy Bucks in honor of the committee chairs and the event chairs (Daryal Gant and Joel Peterson) of our successful Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event.

Jack Dawson had ten Commercial Bucks to tout an upcoming concert in the Methodist ampitheater on Saturday, September 30.  This concert is a fundraiser for three organizations:  Habitat for Humanity, Young and Healthy, and Friends in Need.

Paul Westmoreland had twenty Happy Bucks because UCLA didn't play last week.

Ellie Wildermuth's Happy Buck was for Ohio State's continuing success and #1 football status.

Patsy Christianson had a Happy Buck in honor of Harriet Hammons who is leaving for San Francisco this weekend to become a member of the Baden Powell World Scouting organization.  The King of Sweden will be there.

Harriet Hammons had a Happy Two Bucks to thank Linda Magarian and Patsy Christianson for so willingly taking on the flowers/table decorations for Daryal's installation dinner.  Harriet also said everyone always pitched in to help with needed tasks, and she was appreciative of all the help all year long.  Harriet especially singled out Prez Paul and Clyde Hemphill for all their hard work.

Daryal Gant had a Happy Buck because he was able to get all 24 banana boxes needed to hold ice at the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event.  Unfortunately his car still smells like bananas.  That was his Sad Buck.

Joan Peters had Happy Bucks for the success of the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event and a Word of Advice Buck for Daryal.  Joan's car never lost the banana smell, so now she has a new one - car, that is.

Doris Horwith had an Amazing How News Travels Buck.  She was talking to a vendor in Ventura on Tuesday and the vendor was concerned about the fire in La Cañada.  Doris assured him the fire was out past Lake Castaic.  An hour later she drove home (near the La Cañada Country Club) and found Angeles Crest closed and fire department helicopters landing on the golf course near her house.

Our guest, Micha Abounassar, had thirty three Happy Bucks to thank the LCF Chamber of Commerce for being such a great organization and for the wonderful hospitality by our Kiwanis Club.

Jim Ackland had some very Happy Bucks because he only has six weeks of radiation left and he will be finished with all his treatments.

Steve Hagarty had an Informative BuckSteve said Prez Paul had a propensity for traveling this past year and Steve thought Paul should continue as Prez for at least another 10-11 weeks.

Mel Wilson had a Sad Buck because he was not at the Wine and Gourmet Food Event.  That was balanced out by a very Happy Buck because two granddaughters he barely knew were down from Portland for a wonderful visit.

Ken Lowe had a Sad Buck for the way he left , but a Happy Buck for the success of the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event.

Joel Petersen had a Sad Buck - my kingdom for ICE.  Joel had some Happy Bucks for all the people who jumped in their cars and schlepped ice to the Wine and Gourmet Food event when the ice vendor failed to deliver.

Mark Alexander had Happy Bucks for all the help John (of the Education Foundation) provided working with the food vendors.  There were more Happy Bucks for the upcoming 30th Anniversary of the founding of our city and for the last eighteen years he has been working for LCF.  In answer to questions from the floor, Mark admitted he has not received a letter from USC ending his probation yet.

Howard Backer had five Happy Bucks for the co-chairs of the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event and another five Happy Bucks to celebrate all of Clyde Hemphill's hard work.  Howard said it should have been five hundred Happy Bucks for Clyde because he does so much for our Club.

Pat Anderson offered twenty Challenge Bucks if anyone could give the date our city was incorporated.  Nobody got the right date, so the twenty turned to one Happy Buck.  The date was November 30, 1976.
