The Prez sez . . .

“A life not lived for others is not a life.”  John Wooden

Prez Paul invited all current and incoming Officers, Board Members and Committee Chairs to the Board Meeting Thursday evening, September 7.
The Prez is holding the meeting at Gouda and Vines (on Honolulu in Montrose) and there will be refreshments during the Social Hour starting at six o'clock.  The Board meeting will begin at seven o'clock.

Prez Paul had the sign-up sheets circulating for the two installations dinners coming up the last week of September.  Daryal Gant will be installed as our Division 3 Lt. Governor on September 25th at Brookside Country Club.  Steve Hagerty will be installed as our new club President on September 27th; that dinner will be held at Oakmont Country Club.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Pat Anderson spread the news about the Chamber's biggest fundraiser coming up October 6.  There will be 22 very handsome Men About Town (including our own Joel Peterson) modeling at Oakmont.  Tickets are $125.

Mary Gant had the Key Club distribute flyers for the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event to businesses on both the north and south side of Foothill Blvd.  She has more flyers and postcards for anyone who can use them.  There are still some of the new straw hats available .  They are $20 each and will look great and help guests identify our club members at our Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event.

Gigi Schlueter has collected a very good selection of Silent Auction items, but very few have come from our club members.  She is still looking for donations.

Bill Scherkey is your man for extra tickets for the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting.  Call or send him an email, and he will see that you get as many tickets as you need.

THE PROGRAM

David Brown, the Executive Director of Descanso, had a last minute conflict and wasn't able to present our program.  With less than a day's notice, fellow Kiwanian Anthony Rinaldi (from the Northridge and the Tarzana Kiwanis Clubs) joined us and gave a presentation on some of the problems you can have with living trusts if the assets aren't put or kept in the trust properly.  There were many questions that Anthony was able to answer.  He is an attorney and has a weekly show called "The Law on Your Side."

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Mary Gant claimed she was cut back by hubby, Daryal, but she still had five Happy Bucks because UCLA won their first football game last weekend.  She also had a Happy Buck because grandson Omar started seventh grade yesterday at La Cañada Middle School.

Steve Hagarty had Happy Bucks for a weeks vacation with his parents in Idaho.  He was even able to attend a Kiwanis meeting with his very favorite Kiwanian, his dad.

Tom Burrows had ten Happy Bucks - five for each grandson.  One is attending college in Germany  for a semester as an exchange student from Claremont College.  The other grandson is registering as a freshman at Harvard.

Clyde Hemphill had a Sad Buck that none of the USC graduates was willing to give a Happy Buck for USC's football win on the weekend.  Tom Burrows stepped up to the challenge.

Joel Peterson was sure if his problem required a Happy Buck or a Sad Buck.  They have collected so many bottles of wine for the auction, they will have to auction off a set of bottles every two minutes.

Prez Paul had five Happy Bucks because he will only be leading two more meetings and because USC won on Saturday.

Ellie Wildermuth had a Happy Buck because Ohio State also won their first football game.

Pat Anderson had Happy Bucks because John Voss, our City Treasurer, has managed the Sewer District 3A and 3B money so well, everyone's bill will be lower than expected.

George Lutes had a Sad Buck because he found water leaking out of his garage wall last week, and that required a plumber.  His Happy Buck was for the fun with relatives visiting from Utah.  The relatives and George and Nita all dressed in Red, went to see the UCLA/Utah game, but kept very quiet in the stands.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows and Ed Moulton leading us in God Bless America, Happy Birthday, and On Kiwanis

Opening: flag salute by George Lutes and inspiration by Harriet Hammons

Guests:  Diane DellaValle had several guests: Patricia Futis, Danny Nausha, Sara and Red Allen.  Pat Anderson introduced L.A. County Assistant Fire Chief Matt Gill and Stephanie English, a Public Relations employee of the County Fire Department Elizabeth Calciano brought her friend Sharon Deiner.  Ellie Wildermuth also joined us again.

Master of the Cash Box:  Jack Dawson

Birthdays:  Nick Berkuta celebrated his big "60" yesterday and told us he didn't know whether he was over the top and on the way down or over the top and still going up.

Fines:  Many not wearing their Kiwanis pins found the Cash Box under their nose

Kiwanis Defining Statement:  The Prez pulled Joel Peterson's name from his glass jar, but Joel claimed he had already been called and "passed."  Daryal Gant had his name pulled next, and we all expected he would be able to recite the Defining Statement perfectly ... which he did.  The Prez put a buck in the cash box.    Harriet Hammons was the third name drawn, but she waived her turn to shine and put a dollar in the cash box.  The Prez made his last draw and the lucky man was Bill Watts.  Bill said he "agreed with Daryal."  Then Bill followed in Daryal's good example and recited the Defining Statement perfectly.  The Prez put another buck in the Cash Box.

Secret Greeter:  Protests were loud, but the Prez chose himself and a lot of people had missed shaking his hand.
