The Prez sez . . .

“A life not lived for others is not a life.”  John Wooden

Prez Paul Westmoreland told us he attended the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha District Convention in San Diego last weekend; it was a great success.  Five members from our Club attended.  Past Prez Daryal Gant was introduced as our incoming Division 3 Lt. Governor.  The incoming District Governor is Oscar Knight and his wife's name is Gladys.

The Prez started a sign-up sheet around the room for the Installation Dinner coming up on September 27th.  This will be in lieu of our luncheon meeting that day.  Starting at 6 p.m. at Oakmont Country Club, there will be a no host bar followed by a dinner followed by the installation of Steve Hagerty as our new Club President.

Next week:  Flag Salute by Bill Watts and Invocation by Daryal Gant

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Carlos Cortez has tickets for the annual Boy Scout fundraiser - a Golf Tournament on September 8th.

Howard Backer encouraged the paper stuff for the Children's Hospital tubs.

Harriet Hammons asked for any last sign-ups for our annual Summer Social this Sunday.

Gigi Schlueter is still collecting items for the Silent Auction at our Wine and Gourmet Food event.

Nick Berkuta can take a few more ads for the Wine and Gourmet Food printed program guide.

Mary Gant has plenty of posters and postcards for advertising the Wine and Gourmet Food event.

Pat Anderson is lining up volunteers to man the ticket/entrance booths at the Wine and Gourmet Food event, and she passed around a sign-up sheet.

Pat Flynn really needs help with the Terrific Kids program this fall.  He will be on crutches for several months and needs someone to make all the contacts and presentations at the elementary schools.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Frosty was glad to report no new names have been added to the list, and he was very happy to be able to remove Jim Ackland's name from the Sick, Lame and Ailing list.

THE PROGRAM

Diane DellaValle introduced Bryan Stewart by stating this would be one of the most important presentations we have heard all year.  Bryan works for OneLegacy which is one of the four non-profit California Organ Recovery Agencies established by our state legislature.  These non-profit agencies have organized the organ donor program in California and have developed a sophisticated data base of eligible recipients.   Bryan told us that most donors are people who have suffered a fatal brain injury; half of all donors have had brain aneurysms.  Donors can be any age; only those suffering from AIDs, Cancer, or one particular strain of Hepatitis B cannot be donors.  Suprisingly, sometimes a donor with Hepatitis C (as an example) will be matched with a recipient who also has Hep C.  Two-thirds of those on the transplant waiting lists need kidneys, with livers next most common.  Hearts, lungs, pancreas and small intestines are other organs used for transplant.  Actually, tissue transplants are much more common and include corneas, heart valves, skin, bones, tendons, cartilage, and veins.  If you are very interested in being a donor, the best way to make sure your wishes are known when you die is to be registered on the "Donate Life California Registry."  Registration can be done on the website www.donatelifeCalifornia.org  or at the DMV.  (The little pink dots on your driver's license only indicate you are interested in being a donor but are not an official registration.)  The website also has a lot of other information that is very interesting and thought provoking.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Mary Gant had Accolades for Harriet Hammons and five Happy Bucks because Harriet has already collected two computers for the the PhilAm Kiwanis Club to send to the Phillipines and because Harriet also donated a week at her time-share condo in Escondido for the Silent Auction at our upcoming Wine and Gourmet Food fundraiser.

Carlos Cortez had a Happy Buck because he was able to take 1,200 "at risk" youth to summer Boy Scout Camp up in the mountains.

Bob Wallace told us about a thank you card our club received from Barbara and Jack Esterly, and had a Happy Buck that some people still have good manners.

Bill Watts was Happy that Jim Ackland was back.

Pat Anderson had a very Sad Buck because Cal Trans held up the beginning of the work to repair the collapsed wall on the north side of Foothill just west of the YMCA.  Now the original contractor has moved on and the project will have to be put up for bid again.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows and Ed Moulton leading us in America the Beautiful, and Come On Kiwanis.

Opening: flag salute by Carl Christensen and inspiration by Frosty Boyd

Master of the Cash Box:  Mel Wilson

Anniversaries:  Forty-three years of marriage to Irene was acknowledged by Carl Christensen (anniversary tomorrow) while Gigi Schlueter celebrated her first anniversary last Sunday.  Jim Ackland had an anniversary earlier in the month and joined the Century Club to celebrate 57 years with Jo.

Frosty Challege:  Bill Watts received the most claps, although Frosty and George Lutes gave us a good laugh, too.

Fines:  Prez Paul caught those not wearing their Kiwanis pins

Kiwanis Defining Statement:  Pat Flynn was the first name drawn out of the jar by the Prez.  Pat gave it a good try but missed the fourth word (he said "worldwide" and should have said "global") and was shouted down before we could hear how well he knew the rest of the defining statement.  George Lutes tried it next; he fumbled a little with the last few words but managed to correct himself before the Prez heard him.  Pat had to put a dollar in the kitty, and the Prez put in a dollar because George "passed."  Expanding on the theme a bit, the Prez asked Mel Wilson to recite the Kiwanis motto.  Mel pulled up from memory one of the previous mottos; the current one is "Serving the Children of the World."

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  George Lutes
