The Prez sez . . .
“A life not lived for others is not a life.” John Wooden

The
Prez thanked Tom Burrows for raising over $500 for
our Kiwanis Foundation by selling his My Music Over the Years
CDs. If you haven't purchased one yet, you better hurry.
Tom has already sold over 50 copies and is getting
accolades from many of our Club members.
Prez
Paul Westmoreland explained that Kiwanis International
is sponsoring a 1, 2, 3 Program to
encourage new membership. The goal is to sponsor new members.
Once you have sponsored three new members, your name goes into a
drawing - and the prizes are quite nice. The 1, 2, 3
Contest runs from July 2006 through June 2007. Our Club
Membership Committee is willing to help you bring in some new
members. The Prez told us to scratch our heads and send
Jim Ackland and/or Bob Wallace the name(s) of
anyone you think might be a potential member. The committee
will send out a very personal letter inviting that person to
attend a Wednesday lunch meeting and actually listing some of
the upcoming programs. You will receive a copy of the letter,
and then you can follow up with a phone call to encourage that
person to come to a meeting with you. Simple!
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Daryal Gant announced that new member John Landrum
has been nominated by the Board of Directors to be our Treasurer
for the 2006-2007 Kiwanis year. Voting will take place in two
weeks.
Bill
Scherkey explained that every Club Member would receive four
tickets for the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting,
which is our biggest annual fundraiser. If every member sells
their four tickets, the event will be a big success.
Harriet Hammons reminded everyone that our Summer Social is
coming up soon - on Sunday afternoon, August 27. Be sure to
sign-up and to let Harriet know whether you will be
bringing an hors 'd ouerve or a dessert.
Nick
Berkuta is soliciting business ads or personal
congratulatory ads for the written program for the Wine and
Gourmet Food Tasting. Only one week left to get your name in
print!
Bachy
Bachmayer drew our attention to the new, colorful cannisters
on our lunch tables. Use them to make your weekly donation to
Children's Hospital.
Gigi
Schlueter is in charge of the Silent Auction at our Wine and
Gourmet Food Tasting. She is collecting donations and asking
for participation from all our Club members. Barbara Dawson
is once again agreed to provide a tour of the Los Angeles
Zoo and hubby Jack is providing plumbing services.
FROSTY’S SLA
REPORT
Jim
Ackland is recovering from extensive out-patient surgery for
skin cancer around his ear, and Pete Palermo is still
laid up from back problems.
INDUCTION OF NEW
MEMBERS
Daryal Gant thought John and Diane Landrum
would be great Club members and he claims he has been after the
Landrums for years. Finally John received an
offer he couldn't refuse; if he would join the Club, Howard
Backer would let him be Treasurer! Diane and John
are both California natives. Diane has been a legal
secretary for Pete Palermo and John has always
worked in different areas related to finance. At one time he
was our LCF City Treasurer. Both Diane and John
are active in the LCF Chamber of Commerce and the LCF Rose Float
committee. Daryal and Prez Paul Westmoreland
presented Diane and John with Kiwanis pins,
temporary badges, certificates, member directory, and a package
of instructions for earning a permanent badge. Howard Backer
made the final presentation - and gave John and
Diane their first invoice. Finally, Prez Paul
welcomed them to the Kiwanis International community of 500,000
members.
THE PROGRAM
We
enjoyed a very informative and interesting update on the
Glendale Adventist Medical Center presented by David
Burghart, President of the Glendale Adventist Medical Center
Foundation. David discussed the building and expansion
of the physical facilities and also outlined the medical
specialties and strengths of the hospital. The new Emergency
Department will double the capacity of the present one, and a
new Neruo-Cardiac Center will be the most advanced in Southern
California. Glendale Adventist already has five (of only 200 in
the U.S.) stroke specialists and is in the process of being
accredited as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. The four main
areas of expertise at the Medical Center are Heart and Vascular,
Cancer Services, Women's Health Care, and Orthopedic. The
Glendale Adventist Medical Center is the flagship of the 21
Adventist hospitals on the west coast. The new buildings are
scheduled for occupancy in February 2007.
HAPPY & SAD
BUCKS
Clyde
Hemphill was Happy to have Joel Smith
back from his vacation.
Joel
Smith was Happy to be home after his vacation
to Scandinavia and Russia.
Jack
Dawson was Happy he was going to be able to
tow his 1930 Ford home from Long Beach.
Tom
Burrows wasn't sure if he was Happy or
Sad; he had already lost the envelope Howard Backer
gave him when he arrived.
Chuck
Gulick had a Happy Buck to celebrate the birth
of another granddaughter.
Mary
Gant was Happy it was Daryal who ran
into her car and not the other way around.
Howard Backer was Happy he could continue the
obnoxious tradition of welcoming new members by handing them
their first bill.
Carl
Christensen Happily spent a week in Park City, Utah
with both sons and their families.
Joel
Peterson had a hundred Happy Bucks to
celebrate his son's 11th birthday and was also Happy
and grateful the School District had hired a new principal
for Palm Crest Elementary School.
