The Prez sez . . .
“A life not lived for others is not a life.” John Wooden

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Howard Backer was filling in for Bachy, but requested
paper instead of coins for the Children's Hospital tubs.
Daryal Gant was drumming up awareness for our upcoming
event, the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting on September 17th.
This is our biggest and most profitable fund raiser. Everyone
in the Club will be asked to participate. Many volunteers will
be needed the day of the event. Gambler hats will be available
for purchase in a week or two, and the committee hopes every
Kiwanian will wear one on September 17th.
Mary
Gant has posters and postcards available for advertising the
Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting.
Gigi
Schlueter is in charge of the Silent Auction for the Wine
and Gourmet Food Tasting and is looking for donations from our
members.
Nick
Berkuta is selling the ads for the brochure each attendee
gets at the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting. His print deadline
is August 18.
Karl
Johnson will have the Duck Race purchase forms available in
two weeks. Last year our Club raised $500 on this fundraiser
organized by the Glendale Kiwanis Club. This year there will be
a possible $1,000,000 prize and a "for sure" first prize of a
Toyota Yaris.
Karl
put on a different hat and reminded us all to bring in our
empty print cartridges, soda tops, and old glasses. You can
bring them to the meeting or drop them off at Karl's office.
Linda
Magarian was standing in for Harriet Hammons and
reminded everyone to put the Summer Social on their calendar for
August 27th.
FROSTY’S SLA REPORT
Carl
Giesecke
is still recovering from his hip fracture a year ago.
Jim
Ackland
is having some surgery (minor, we hope) on his face.
Pete
Palermo
and
Al
Restivo
are both having back problems.
THE PROGRAM
Prez
Paul came up with a great program substitution when
scheduled speaker, Al Restivo, couldn't make it to speak
on Understanding Your Stress due to a back problem. The
Liar's Club (Aaron Solomon, Pat Anderson,
Nick Berkuta, Matt Regan, and Gigi Schlueter)
challenged the audience with their wild and crazy definitions of
words no one had ever heard before. Diane DellaValle was
the polished emcee and kept the pace quick and interesting. We
were all wishing we remembered more about Latin and Greek
roots! A great time was had by all!!! Definitely a wonderful
Stress Reliever and the consensus was the
Liar's Club should become an annual program.
HAPPY & SAD BUCKS
Nick
Berkuta had a Sad
Buck because he just heard that Bea Abbey who
wrote the Roving Turtle column in the Valley Sun and was also a
volunteer in the Chamber office and a Chamber Ambassador, just
died.
Karl
Johnson was very Happy he was vacationing in
the Virgin Islands during our local hot spell.
Mary
Gant had a Happy Buck for Gigi Schlueter
who had her Grand Opening for her new salon, Allure,
yesterday. Mary's second Happy Buck was
for Tom Slaughter her got her e-mail back up and working
again.
George
Lutes had friends visiting from out-of-town to escape the
heat back east, and in spite of the heat in California he had a
Happy Buck because they found a little bit of
relief in Santa Barbara (the temp didn't hit 100).
Shirley Hingst had a Happy Buck for our
hospitality toward their InterClub group.
Daryal
Gant had another Happy Buck for Tom
Slaughter because now he doesn't have to listen to Mary
bitch complain any more about her e-mail not working.
Linda
Schooley was Happy she and her mom were able
to celebrate Linda's 65th birthday by taking a trip to
Carmel and Big Sur.
Bill
Scherkey had Happy Bucks for a week-long visit
with his daughter, Nicole, her hubby and two grandsons in
Indiana. It was the hottest place in the nation for several
days, however.
Pat
Anderson had three Happy Bucks. Number one
Happy Buck was for Gigi's grand opening of her
new business. Number Two Happy Buck was for
Tom Slaughter who fixed her computer and cleared out the
Spam. Number Three HB was for Melinda Thompson
who knows how to "crack the whip" and tame the IRS.
Diane
DellaValle was Happy to have her special
friend, Ellie Wildermuth, visiting with the AM Club.
Matt
Regan was Happy he was still married at his
one year anniversary and celebrated by taking a trip to Ireland.
Jack
Dawson, who admitted to being 75, is Happy his
76 year old car will show up in Long Beach next week.
Paul
Westmoreland was Happy he was able to be at
Whiskey a Go Go last night to see Elaine's grandson
perform. However, his ears are still ringing.
