The Prez sez . . .

“A life not lived for others is not a life.”  John Wooden

4   Our Prez, Paul Westmoreland, encouraged everyone to consider attending the District Convention in San Diego . . . coming up August 11-14.  This is an excellent opportunity for club members to find out how friendly Kiwanians really are.   The meetings and seminars are fast-paced and will fill you with lots of enthusiasm and good ideas.  Call the Prez or Bill Scherkey if you want to sign up or need more information.

4   The Prez invited Jim Ackland to take the mike and talk about the Membership Drive currently going on.  Jim got a little distracted and started telling us about Bob Wallace dancing like a water buffalo on the top of a table at Hilltop Cafe last week.  That tall tale mysteriously led into a request that every member submit the names and addresses of three potential Club members to Bob Wallace by August 2.  The membership committee will send each person an invitation to attend a meeting, and the letter will describe several upcoming programs that are of high interest.

THE PROGRAM

Talent Show producer Tom Burrows did a super job identifying the talent in our Club.  The program started with a melody made famous by the Mills Brothers; Jack Dawson sang Paper Doll and was accompanied by Tom Burrows.  If you missed Frosty Boyd playing his saw, you wouldn't believe that he can play Home on the Range, I Been Workin' on the Railroad, and Battle Hymn of the Republic with a violin bow and a huge saw (and backed up by Tom Burrows on the keyboard).  Our barbershop quartet sang My Evaline, I had a Dream Dear, and Down by the Riverside; Jack Dawson, Al Perry, Ed Moulton (who looked like he was floating, he was soooo happy), and friend Michael VonShulkouven made up the quartet.  Bachy Bachmayer sang the story about Lydia, the Tattoed Lady.  He was followed by Daryal Gant, who played his guitar and sang Chocolate Ice Cream Cone (a famous song in the Central Valley in the '50s).  After accompanying almost everyone else, Tom Burrows played for himself and sang Old Devil Moon; it was great and made you wish you were on a balcony in some romantic hideaway with your "honey."  This fantastic show ended with the Kiwanis Sisters (Patsy Christianson, Diane DellaValle, and Mary Gant) back for a second year appearance as the Pistol Packin' Mamas.  The audience helped end the program by joining in a Sing-A-Long.  Many thanks to producer Tom Burrows, who received flowers and accolades.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Mary Gant had five Happy Bucks because her daughters and grandchildren are still here visiting.  She had another five HBs in anticipation of today's Talent Show.

Clyde Hemphill was Happy that once again La Cañada was named an outstanding Soap Box Derby City this year.

Pat Anderson had five Happy Bucks - one for each LCF councilperson and one Happy Buck for our city manager and Club member Mark Alexander for all their hard work on Monday night analyzing and finally approving the Town Center project.  Several Kiwanians stood up and spoke at the meeting including Pat, Jim Edwards, Jack Dawson, and Nick Berkuta.

Diane DellaValle had a Happy Buck because our Soap Box Derby was mentioned in the CalNev-Ha magazine.  She had a Sad Buck because the magazine didn't specify "Noon" Kiwanis.

Jack Dawson had a Sad Buck because his wife wasn't able to attend and enjoy the Talent Show today.  Then he mused that maybe it should be a Happy Buck since he didn't know if his performance would be that good.  (It was that good .... by the way!)

Daryal Gant had Happy Toothpicks for Mark Alexander because he attended the Wine and Gourmet Food committee meeting last night even though he was still at the City Hall at 2:00 a.m.

Vi Ragazzi had some Happy Bucks because Frank's daughter and son-in-law were visiting from Colorado.

Tom Gilfoy had a Question Buck.  What was going on at the LCF Council meeting on Monday?  Apparently you are spending too much time at Descanso, Tom.  Have you heard of the Town Center Development?

Mark Alexander had a Happy Buck for the city council and another Happy Buck for the city staff who endured a six hour (+) marathon meeting before approving the Town Center project.  There was a Sad Buck because the Foothill Leader got the story all wrong.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows and Ed Moulton leading us in the God Bless American, Happy Birthday, and Come On Kiwanis.

Opening: flag salute by George Lutes and inspiration by Chuck Gulick

Guests:  It is wonderful that Theo Abelman joins us so frequently.  John and Diane Landrum were visiting for the third time and submitted their applications to join our Club.  Ed Moulton's lovely wife of 65 1/2 years also joined us; Connie doesn't need an introduction and we hope she comes more often.

Master of the Cash Box:   Jim Reynolds

Anniversaries: Mel Wilson celebrated 57 years of marriage by joining the Century Club.

Birthdays:  Tom Burrows will celebrate his birthday tomorrow, the 20th.  He reminded us this was the same day the astronauts landed on the moon in 1969.  We hope our rendition of Happy Birthday was somewhat melodic.

Fines:  Jim Stratton was the first person picked on by the Prez.  Jim not only wasn't wearing his pin today, he also wasn't wearing his pin when the picture was taken that put him on the front page of the Outlook.  Jim was in the limelight, but many other Club members also had to pony up for not wearing their Kiwanis pins.

Kiwanis Defining Statement -

Secret Greeter:  Al Perry Sr. was delighted he didn't need to shake the hand of the Secret Greeter today, since he would have had to shake his own hand.  Al probably gets fined more than anyone else in the Club for not shaking the hand of the Secret Greeter; he usually comes in after everyone has started eating and doesn't get a chance to shake hands.

Frosty Challenge:  Bill Watts and Bachy Bachmayer took on the challenge.  The voting was close, but Bill Watts won the clap vote and received a keychain with a boomerang from Prez Paul.

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  Patsy Christiansen
