The Prez sez . . .

“A life not lived for others is not a life.”  John Wooden

4        The good news ... he's feeling much better and may be home this week.  The bad news ... Steve Hagerty had a stroke on Monday.  Only his right hand and arm seem to be affected.  Steve is optimistic he will be able to lead our meeting next week as well as our Board Meeting next Thursday evening.

4        It appears there will still be enough Board members in town to hold our Board Meeting next week.  If - at the last minute - we are lacking a quorum, everyone will be notified that the meeting will be held the following Thursday.  (The Prez will be gone next week.)

4        The summer CalNev-Ha District convention will be held this year in San Diego, August 17-19.  If you register by the end of June (today), the fee is $110.  Otherwise, the fee is $130.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tom Burrows is still looking for the hidden talent in our Club.  The Talent Show is coming up in a few weeks, so give him a call.

THE PROGRAM

Sam, the police dog

Carl Christensen
introduced Glendale Police Officer Sean Sholtin and his K-9 partner, SamSam was 18 months old when he came to Glendale from Germany in September, 2005.  Sean and Sam attended four weeks of training in Ventura and then "hit the streets."  Sam had not had any training in Germany, so the four week course in "tracking" was just the beginning.  Sean and Sam train every day, and Sam recently earned certification in bomb detection.  Although there are no plans to train Sam to search for drugs, he has already influenced several people to confess and hand over their stash of marijuana.  Apparently, these people just assumed Sam would know and "get them."  The expenses for the four Glendale Police Department K-9s are completely funded by grants and private donations.  While Officer Sean was presenting this interesting program, handsome Sam was lying obediently on the floor, but he kept letting us know he really likes a little bit more action.

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows and Ed Moulton leading us in Your A Grand Old Flag and Hail Kiwanis

Opening: flag salute by Bill Scherkey and inspiration by Melinda Thompson

Anniversaries:  Mike Leininger married his high school sweetheart 34 years ago and celebrated last Saturday.   Allen Perry Jr. and Helen were married 27 years ago on June 10; Allen reminded the Prez he also had a birthday in May and joined the Century Club to celebrate both events.  Karl Johnson combined his anniversary and upcoming birthday by joining the Century Club.  George Lutes didn't hold it against the Prez that his anniversary was overlooked and also joined the Century Club.

Birthdays:  There were three, but every one of the birthday "kids" was on vacation or "away."

Fines:  The Prez fined himself a dollar for overlooking Charles Broberg's anniversary last week and another dollar for overlooking George Lutes anniversary this week.  Jack Dawson and Howard Backer paid fines for not wearing their Kiwanis pins; Bea Cirar pulled her pin out of her purse and the Prez waived her fine.

Frosty Challenge:  Frosty's joke was so good many didn't "get it."  Fred Schooley, Jack Dawson, Bachy Bachmayer, and Bea Cirar took up the challenge and Bea won the clap vote.

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  We didn't even get to hear the number because Prez Paul admitted his own number was drawn (by a disinterested
