The Prez sez . . .
“A life not lived for others is not a life.” John Wooden
Today’s music was by Tom
Burrows. Thank you Tom! Chief yodeler Ed Moulton made
us all sound good with “Happy Birthday, Tom Stafford”
(Tom is 90 years old today) and “It’s a Grand Old Flag.”
Bachy Bachmeyer led our Flag Salute (today is Flag Day!) and
Howard Backer gave the invocation.
The Prez
asked Jim Acklund what the Kiwani’s defining statement
was, and Jim’s answer was not even close but was given
with such gusto and authority that The Prez didn’t even
fine him. Frosty Boyd told us all about the “Vial of
Life”.
Today we
had guests galore! Tom Stafford brought wife Helen
and son Bill to help him celebrate his 90th
birthday.

Our two 90 year old members - Ed Moulton and
Tom
Stafford
Harriet Hammons
brought son John who brought the cake for Tom.
Deborah Weirick brought her father Steve Fever from
New Mexico, Fred Schooley brought his wife Linda.
Margaret Pankratz was the guest of Dave Spence, or
was it Pat Anderson? Either way, Pat brought
Stephanie Brashears and Starr Frazier from the
Chamber office.
Pete Palermo
returned
after a long absence, to tell us (in Italian) about a great trip
to Italy, to complain about getting spaghetti here after all
that pasta there, and to top it all off with a donation to the
Century Club. Steve
Hagerty
was the secret greeter.
Bob Wallace
carried the can for The
Prez
and collected fines for this and that. We celebrated
Tom Stafford’s
birthday a second time with a second rendition of “Happy
Birthday” and all got a piece of cake to complement the cookies.
Happy, Sad Bucks (& yucks):
Jim Acklund
was sad that he was leaving
tomorrow for a two-week fishing trip in Alaska.
Mary Gant was sad
that she had spent last weekend in Virginia for a 50th
class reunion, but everyone there was old.
Deborah Weirick
announced her resignation from the club but joined the Century
Club in leaving.
Harriet Hammons
asked us to remember
Linda Magarian on
her trip to Armenia. She talked about giving a certificate to
the club and the next DCM, and
Charles Broberg
gave a buck to find out what the DCM was (District Council
Meeting).
There were no jokes (no joke!),
no challenges, no nothing!
Daryal Gant won the
raffle on a ticket that Mary had bought.
Announcements:
Clyde Hemphill
reminded us that the Pet Clinic is tomorrow night. Steve
Hagerty needs a fourth for an interclub TONIGHT! Mary
Gant reminded us that her daughter will be speaking to us on
the 5th of July, so get ready with some questions to
ask someone who has lived in Saudi Arabia. Aaron Solomon
told us to bring our dog to the Roger Barkeley Community Center
“Petastic” this Saturday. Bachy Bachmeyer reminded us to
give to the Children’s Hospital through the tubs on the tables.
Tom Burrow wants you to volunteer for the club Talent
Show which will be on July 19th. Harriet Hammons
confirmed August 27 for the club Summer Social at the home of
Paul Toeffel (sign-up sheet going around). Frosty Boyd
announced that Hal Thomas had had surgery but was
expected home tomorrow.
Today’s Speaker:

Dr Joy Crisp of JPL
Dr. Joy
Crisp
of JPL was the Project Scientist on the 2003 Mars project with
the rovers Spirit and Opportunity. Mars no longer looks
hospitable, but there is evidence that there might have been
water on Mars at some time in the past (and so, possibly,
water-based life), so the rovers’ challenge was to explore sites
that promised to offer further evidence of past water. In short,
they did find that evidence! They found minerals that are not
expected to exist unless they have formed in the presence of
water! The rovers were designed to last at least 90 days, and
are still going over two years later (why so long beyond the
design time? Not enough testing time to see how over-designed
they were!). Future Mars rover missions are in the works (with
launch expected by 2009) to further explore our near neighbor.
We sang Hail
Kiwanis to the tune of “On Wisconsin” and headed for the door…
