The Prez sez . . .

“A life not lived for others is not a life.”  John Wooden

  • Congratulations to Anthony Portantino who easily won the election Tuesday for Democratic candidate for the California Assembly.  Life is good!!!!

  • Tom Burrows had his CDs for sale on top of the piano.  All $10 goes to our Foundation, thanks to Tom covering all the production costs.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Daryal Gant discussed our difficulty finding someone to take the position of Treasurer for the 2006/2007 Kiwanis year.  It is a big job and we have been very lucky to have Howard Backer taking all the responsibility for the accounting for both the Club and the Foundation for several years.  In many larger Kiwanis clubs, this is a paid position.  Our Board of Directors has decided to offer some financial incentives to a qualified person.  We are looking for someone who is a current member or willing to become a member of our Kiwanis Club.  The incentives include a $100 per month stipend, all dues and lunches covered, and two tickets to every special Club function.  The Treasurer must have a background in accounting and be familiar with QuickBooks software.  If you are interested or know a non-Club person who might be interested, please contact Daryal.

Tom Burrows is still looking for participants for our Club Talent Show on July 19.

Linda Magarian stood in for Harriet Hammons; the lovely colored flyers Harriet prepared to remind us about the Summer Social at the Toffels needed one small correction; the date was wrong.  August 27 is the correct date.  Linda also announced she and Harriet presented ten trophies to the top book readers at Lincoln Avenue Elementary School.

Bachy Bachmayer reminded us to use the canisters on our tables to help Children's Hospital continue caring for those children who can't afford the medical services they need.

Clyde Hemphill will be rounding up volunteers to help at the Pet Clinic on June 15th.

Pat Anderson invited all to the Tri Valley Mixer  on June 22.  Festivities will be at the Valley Sun starting at 5:30 p.m.

THE PROGRAM

Dave Stegner is our La Cañada Flintridge City Public Safety Coordinator.  He admitted it is hard to keep people thinking about being prepared for a disaster.  The most common residential disaster in the U.S. is a fire.  There are four stages for dealing with disasters:  mitigation, preparation, response, and recovery.  The Hazard Mitigation Act of 2000 requires all local agencies have a disaster plan.  Significant portions of the disaster plans developed during the cold war are being used and modified for today's plans.  If we have a major disaster, government resources will be spread very thin.  Help for individuals may not arrive for seven to ten days.  That is why preparation must be carried out at the individual and neighborhood level.  We should each be planning to be self sufficient for 7-10 days whether we are at home, at work or in our car.  Dave touched lightly on many different aspects of preparation and left a number of helpful brochures and flyers as reference material.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Anthony Portantino was Happy to be from the La Cañada (Kiwanis) Club of Mayors, and Century Club Happy because of the election results.  He was also Happy Carol Liu called him from Sacramento to remind him to go to Kiwanis; he was so excited about the results of the election he forgot it was Wednesday.

John Parady was very Happy to have another grandchild.

Daryal Gant was Happy he lives in a country where he has the opportunity to vote.

Al Restivo wasn't Happy because he couldn't vote for Anthony.

Pat Anderson was 1-2-3 Happy-Happy-Sad that Anthony won the election, wore his Kiwanis pin at the City Council meeting on Monday, and would no longer be on the City Council.

Linda Magarian's family immigrated from Armeni 100 years ago, and she was Happily looking forward to her upcoming (and first) trip to Armenia.  She is leaving this Sunday and will be returning just two days before she leaves with Diane DellaValle for the Kiwanis International Convention in Montreal.  Linda was Sad she wouldn't be back to a Wednesday meeting until July 5.

Clyde was Happy Deputy Chris Deacon took such good care of us at our Soap Box Derby and could join us today.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows and and Ed Moulton leading us in the This is My Country, Hi Neighbor and Come On Kiwanis

Opening: flag salute by Jim Reynolds and inspiration by Carlos Cortez

Guests:  Al Restivo introduced Adam Liebelt who has visited before and is interested in becoming a member; Anthony Portantino brought one of his campaign workers - Kevin Cunningham made more than 5000 campaign telephone calls for Anthony.  Deputy Chris Deacon was here with our speaker; Chris is the Public Resource officer from the Sheriff's Department.

Master of the Cash Box:  Jeb Long

Frosty Challenge:  Talk about contenders!  Pat Anderson, Bill Watts, Elizabeth Calciano, and Bea Cirar all took the challenge.  Bea won the "vote by applause" by a wide margin; quiet Bea had everyone howling.

Fines:  Prez Paul was getting back in practice and made the mistake of fining Anthony for not wearing his pin.  The Prez was stopped in his tracks and didn't even have time to collect the fine because attention was turned to the full page article in the June issue of our International Kiwanis magazine about Prez Paul; a great article and a nice sized picture ..... and no Kiwanis pin in sight!  Be sure to turn to page 40 and read the entire article.

Secret Greeter:  Glen Petite

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  Jim Reynolds
