The Prez sez . . .
“A life not lived for
others is not a life.”
John Wooden
4
A big THANK YOU to Prez Elect Steve
Hagerty from the Prez. Steve filled in admirably
during Paul's absence.
4
Additional THANKS to Carl Christensen and Karl Johnson
for chairing our annual Kiwanis' La Cañadan of the Year
event and to Patsy Christianson and Diane DellaValle
for providing the flowers on every table.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Joel
Smith and Mike Leininger requested all volunteers for
the Soap Box Derby on Friday and Saturday and for the Hamburger
Booth on Monday. Mike could use a few more volunteers
for the Hamburger Booth.
THE PROGRAM
"Life is
Good. ..." according to Anthony Portantino, and there
was a crowd of over 130 people on hand to honor him as our 2005
La Cañadan of the Year. Radio announcer and former Club member
Jerry Healey came back to be our Master of Ceremonies.
The Karl and Carl team (Karl Johnson and Carl
Christensen) gave Anthony's introduction and
biography. Personal tributes by Joy Gifford, Steve
Del Guercio and Ellen Portantino were followed by
presentations on behalf of many government officials and
agencies and local organizations. There were a few "roasts"
and many accolades! Adjectives describing Anthony
included ethical, optimist, hardworking, empathetic, available,
and creative problem solver. Greg Brown warned that the most
dangerous place in La Cañada Flintridge is between Anthony
and a camera. One of the highest "political" accolades was that
Anthony has never said anything in private that is
different from what he has said in public. Staunch Republican
Joe Thompson quipped that Anthony was his favorite
Democrat and the only one he has ever voted for.
CONGRATULATIONS, ANTHONY!

FACTS AND FICTION
Music: piano tunes by Tom Burrows and and Ed
Moulton leading us in God Bless America and For
He's A Jolly Good Fellow.
Opening:
flag salute by Steve
Hagerty
and
inspiration by Debra
Weirick
Guests: Untold numbers (too
many to name) were there to honor Anthony Portantino,
and we were also joined by members from the Glendale
and the La Cañada AM
Kiwanis Clubs
Fines: Mary Gant proposed that Anthony Portantion be
fined for not wearing his pin for the full front page newspaper
photo. Since Anthony couldn't deny the charge, he
offered a dollar in penance, plus an additional $99 for the
honor of being selected La Cañadan of the year. What a way to
join the Century Club!
