The Prez sez . . .
“A life not lived for
others is not a life.”
John Wooden
Prez Elect Steve Hagerty was still filling in for Prez
Paul.
Prez Paul is still recuping, getting his strength back
slowly. He hopes to attend the meeting next week, but he'll be
sitting out with the unwashed masses instead of leading the
meeting.
Next week: Flag Salute by Mel Wilson and Invocation by
Howard Backer
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Bill
Scherkey announced
the selection of this year's La Cañadan of the Year ... our very
own Anthony Portantino! Anthony took a modest bow and
said a few words. Few believed him, but Anthony claimed
it was the first time in his life he was speechless (when
Carl C. called to give him the news).
Clyde
Hemphill encourage
attendance at the annual Bingo Barbeque fundraiser next
Saturday, May 6. Always a lot of fun and another important
fundraiser for the La Cañada Rose Float.
Harriet
Hammons was a little
confused about the start date for Daryal's term as Lt.
Gov., but her congrats were appreciated. She was looking for
interested members to support activities of several other
Kiwanis Clubs - the Phil Am Fashion Show on May 13 and the St.
Bedes Prayer Breakfast.
Bachy
Bachmayer encouraged
us to fill the tubs for Children's Hospital.
Joel
Smith wants everyone
to be ready to sign up next week for at least one Soap Box Derby
volunteer position on Friday night and/or Saturday of Memorial
Day weekend.
Nick
Berkuta is still
taking ads for the Soap Box Derby program.
Clyde
Hemphill promoted
the May 6 YMCA Prayer Breakfast. Speaker is Mike Garrett, USC
Athletic Director.
FROSTY’S SLA REPORT
Dick
DeGrey
missed the meeting today because he had to take his driver's
test.
Carl
Gieseke
generally feeling pretty good but down with a sinus infection.
Frank
and
Vi
Ragazzi
still recuping;
Frank
is busy with therapy for his leg.
Prez
Paul
is trying to get his energy back as well as his driving
privileges; he hopes to be at the meeting next week.
THE PROGRAM
Renee
Focht is a
twenty-year employee of the U.S. Postal Service. She started
her career as a letter carrier, but has received a number of
promotions and is now a Postal Inspector. She had an
informative slide show that covered mail fraud and identity
theft. Renee had some very good suggestions for safeguarding
mail and personal information.
HAPPY & SAD BUCKS
Clyde Hemphill
presented
5 Happy
Bucks
from
Joan
Peters
in honor of
George
Lutes. George
prepared three beautiful certificates for the scholarships to be
awarded on Friday to three deserving Key Clubbers at Flintridge
Prep.
Due to
rainy weather and the flu bug, Ed Moulton only had one
Happy Buck for his 90th birthday celebration cruise
around the Hawaiian Islands with his entire family.
Mary
Gant was more than
Happy with her shopping trip last week, even
though she missed Daryal a little bit. Sounded like a
miniscule "miss" to us!
Harriet
Hammons already had
a Happy time on her great trip to the Caribbean,
plus she is looking forward to her trip this weekend with her
son to Portland Oregon to be interviewed for the Boy Scout
International Jamboree.
There were
five Happy Bucks from Tom Burrows. He was
involved in the selection process for scholarship recipients,
and over half of the very well qualified high school applicants
were Key Club members.
Key Club
also inspired Happy Bucks from Ken Lowe.
One of our LCHS Key Clubbers won a $1,000 scholarship and
another received recognition as an Outstanding Lt. Governor at
the recent Key Club Convention in Sacramento.
FACTS AND FICTION
Music:
piano tunes by
Tom Burrows and Ed Moulton leading us in God Bless
America, Welcome
Welcome, Happy
Birthday, and Hail Kiwanis
Opening:
flag
salute by Hal Thomas
and
inspiration by Scott
Fuller
Guests:
a sad but
actual fact .... there were none
Master of the Cash Box: Bill
Watts
Anniversaries: Bill Watts
thought he could avoid recognition by being sergeant at arms,
but Prez Steve
didn't
miss pointing out that
Bill
just
celebrated his 47th wedding anniversary. That was worth a
Century Club donation!
Birthdays: Only a
brave and dedicated Kiwanian would report joyfully that he
celebrated his birthday on a bus riding to San Jose with 60 high
school Key Clubbers. But that is why Ken Lowe is such a
special person! Charles Broberg also admitted to a
birthday, and both fine men were saluted with our rendition of
Happy Birthday.
Fines:
Those who didn't
wear their Kiwanis pins helped fill the Cash Box. Anthony
Portantino claimed Dave Spence stole his pin, but
nobody way buying that excuse.
Frosty
Challenge: Carl Christensen, Elizabeth Calciano
and Bill Watts all took
up the challenge. Except for Frosty, animals were
involved ... Carl told about kittens,
Elizabeth
had Noah's Ark, and it was
singing canaries for Bill. Voting was inconclusive,
which was good for Prez Elect Steve - since he didn't
have a prize for anyone, anyway.
Secret
Greeter: Glen Petite
Fifty-Fifty Drawing:
