The Prez sez . . .
“A life not lived for
others is not a life.”
John Wooden
Actually the Prez
didn’t say anything; he’s hanging out in a hospital, according
to Prez Elect Steve Hagerty. It seems that the bypass
from a few years ago needs up-grading or redoing. We all wish
Prez Paul the best and a speedy recovery.
Tom
Slaughter introduced the Terrific Kids from Palm Crest
School and their parents. From Tom’s report it was
obvious that every student attending today were well deserved
recipients.

Terrific Kids and their parents
Next week: Flag Salute by Bea Cirar and
Invocation by Ed Moulton and Charles Broberg.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Derby
Director, Joel Smith, put in a plug for the Soap Box
Derby on Saturday, May 27 when the full club will be expected to
put on the 7th Annual Greater Soap Box Derby.

Aaron
Solomon advised us of the 8th Annual Denim Day,
scheduled for April 19th in awareness of the
devastating impacts of sexual violence against women. Aaron
left brochures for all of us on the information table.
Pat
Anderson gave us information of how to become a Pole Banner
sponsor. These lovely and new banners will be up along Foothill
Boulevard for a month in anticipation of the annual LCF Fiesta
Days being held over the Memorial Day weekend. This is a great
community event and our own Nick Berkuta will be
this year’s Parade chairman. -- Pat further called our
attention to a yellow flyer on each table bringing attention to
Emergency Preparedness and inviting all to the next CofC mixer
on Thursday, April 20, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Descanso Gardens
Auxiliary Parking Area.
Bachy
Bachmeyer gave our weekly reminder to drop in coins or bills
in the tubs on our tables in our on-going financial support of
Children’s Hospital.
Program
Chair Diane DellaValle asked that any guests planning to
attend next week’s program by Gil Garcetti get
reservations in. This will be a very well attended program so
we expect our members to be here in force and bring guests, plus
we already know of other Kiwanis Clubs plan to be with us.
FROSTY’S SLA REPORT
Please
take a few minutes to call Dick DeGrey, Carl Gieseke,
and Frank & Violet Regazzi. It helps the healing process
to hear from friends.
THE PROGRAM

Dr.
Gerald Beeve presented a program on the 16 trips he and his
wife have taken to the island nation of Fiji. On their 25th
wedding anniversary the two vacationed in Fiji and while the
islands were well written up there was nothing about the
people. Dr. Beeve and his wife, Dorothy, fell in
love with the natives. Being an ophthalmologist, Dr. Beeve
was immediately aware that no natives wore glasses. He then
asked if their eyes were that good or if there were no eye
care. Unfortunately it was the latter. Once the Beeves
were aware of the dire needs of these lovable people they began
a mission to give and get help. Vision has been corrected
through the fitting of glasses, to surgery to correct glaucoma,
removal of cataracts, crossed eyes, damage from infection, and
many other eye ailments. It was a fascinating talk and visuals
and everyone felt that Dr. Beeve and the team that now
goes to Fiji are to be commended for their work. Dr. Beeve
even brought one of his patients with him to our meeting,
Livai Kori, who was blinded by a beer bottle when Livai
stepped in to stop a drunken man from beating his son.
Livai’s eye lid has been surgically enhanced, the blinded
eye was removed and a new glass eye was implanted. Then looking
at Livai’s teeth which were in terrible shape from his
enjoyment of rugby, Dr. Beeve arranged for
Livai to have new teeth. Livai gave all of us a big,
beautiful smile. In a nation of 800,000 people Dr. Beeve
and his associates have tested 20,000 inhabitants, given 4,000
pair of glasses, removed cataracts or done lazar correction on
2,000 people and have performed 26 corneal transplants.
