The Prez sez . . .

“A life not lived for others is not a life.”  John Wooden

*      Steve Hagerty sitting in for a traveling Paul Westmoreland    reminded all about the March 5th Governor’s Luncheon, there is a sign-up sheet available.  Ed Moulton encouraged all to attend as he will be leading the singing and wants the entire Division to know ‘Come on Kiwanis,’

*   Next President Elect Steve introduced Howard Backer to present the resolution to increase the cost of meals due to the raise in cost to us from Patina.  We will vote next week on this resolution and below is the Proposal that the Board of Directors has approved and is seeking approval of from the Club.

*  Paul Westmoreland, Clyde Hemphill and Howard Backer have been following up on a request by Patina Catering to increase the cost of the luncheons served to the Club.  As a background we first started dealing with Patina in the month of June, 2002 and Patina agreed to charge the Club $9 which was the same price that had been charged by Arbor Crest Catering.  Descanso Gardens changed from Arbor Crest Catering to Patina Catering as the exclusive caterer at the Gardens.  Since that time there has not been a change in the amount charged by Patina.  Patina has suggested that we increase the amount that we pay to $13.  For this amount we will get a salad, a vegetable or a starch, a protein, fruit, cookies (brownies not included) and iced tea and coffee for $13.

*  Kiwanis would pass the $13 cost through to the members which would result in a $2 increase for meals billed to active members and spouses and to meals for guests.  As a result of this change we estimate that the income of the Club would be reduced by approximately $2,000 per year.  The Board will determine if we can reduce other expenses including the amount transferred to the Foundation to offset this loss of revenue.

*   The Board of Directors has approved the proposed arrangement with Patina and that this resolution be submitted to the membership for approval of the assessment of $13 per meal.”

*     Next week:  Flag Salute by Scott Fuller and Invocation by Mary Gant.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

…….Harriett Hammons – Thanked the 12 members who attended Glendale Kiwanis ‘Day at the Races’; said books have been presented to the class at Union Avenue Elementary School; reported that Jim Ackland will become a tutor at Verdugo Woodlands Elementary, where Harriet also tutors.  Bravo to these two.  On March 10th the big Boy Scout Auction will be presented, see Harriett for details and tickets.

……..Deborah Weirick disclosed that the Crescenta-Cañada YMCA is in the middle of their annual campaign to raise money for children and families that could not otherwise participate in programs.  Both Jim Ackland and Tom Slaughter are working on this campaign.  There were envelopes on the back table for those who would like to donate to this worthy cause.

……..Diane Delle Valle told us that next week we will be hosts to the Rose Queen and her Court and the following week Marguerite Cooper a retired U.S. Diplomat will speak.  Two terrific programs, not to be missed.

……..Bachy Bachmeyer reminded us all to drop a dollar or two in the containers on the table for the Children’s Hospital.

……...Bob Wallace informed us of a fund raiser tonight to benefit the Roger Barkley Center at Round Table Pizza, just mention the Center when you order your pizza whether eating in or taking out.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

…….Dr. Frosty reported on Clyde Hemphill who had two stints placed in his arteries in the heart last Friday; one was plastic, the other was steel since that artery was 100% blocked.  We all wish Clyde a speedy recovery because there’s so much for him to do here!

SPECIAL PRESENTATION

Bob Wallace happily presented a permanent badge to Joel Peterson.  We are sure that Joel gets the award for speed, or lack there of, for receiving his badge, Joel was inducted 3 years ago or so.  Welcome Joel!

THE PROGRAM

…….Jeraldine Sanders, best seller author of the book ‘Love Boats’ gave us a delightful talk on her travel through life from being a mom and having to figure a way to support her family first by simply lying her way into to the modeling business and then into being a Hostess and Tour Director on cruise ships.  Jeraldine kept us entertained with her many, many stories.  Her letters home became the basis of her books after her own mother sent some of the letters to a book publisher.  Her book was turned into a ‘Movie or the Week’ on TV and then into the very popular ‘Love Boat’ series that ran for 10 years.  Jeraldine has studied astrology, palmistry, and many other related fields.  She concluded her talk by stating that ‘you tend to move toward whatever you dwell on’ thus reminding us that we somewhat control our destinies.

Diane announced at the conclusion of the program that Jeraldine generously brought her books for sale, the wholesale cost is $3 and the books then were sold to the club members for $6 with the club keeping the profit of $3 per book.  Thank you Jeraldine
