The Prez sez . . .

“A life not lived for others is not a life.”  John Wooden

  • The Glendale Kiwanis Duck Race was very successful.  A full report (a small book) on the fundraising project is available for review.  See the Prez if the report isn't on the back table next week.

  • Our Kiwanis District Governor will be visiting the area on March 5th, and there will be a meeting at Brookside Country Club.  A sign-up sheet is being passed around.

  • The New Members Orientation yesterday was very successful.  Seven new members attended.

  • Next week:  Flag Salute by Tom Burrows and Invocation by Joan Peters.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Harriet Hammons encouraged people to sign up right away for Day at the Races on February 12th.  Last year they sold out.

Bachy Bachmayer encouraged all of us to support Children's Hospital.

Diane DellaValle encouraged us to bring guests for next week's program on the Alex Theater.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Connie Moulton's sister passed away, and Ed and Connie could use some support.  They are finding the adjustment to their new living accommodations quite difficult.

TERRIFIC KIDS

Six very special young students from Palm Crest and their parents joined us for lunch.  Deborah Weirick introduced Kelsey, Buck, Natalie, Brian, Alex, and Skye.  Their activities, accomplishments and goals were most impressive and they each received an enthusiastic round of applause.

CRAFT TALK by Joel Peterson

 The Road Less Traveled
by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Then Joel proceeded to explain how his life has been like the poem.  Joel was born in South Korea.  His mother worked at the oldest profession on earth and his father was an unknown American.  He grew up in a Korean orphanage, but was adopted by an American family when he was seven years old.  He lived in Minnesota in a small (boring) town with Swedish roots, and his third generation parents and his siblings were all tall and blond.  Joel couldn't wait to get out into the "real" world.  He combined his junior and senior year in high school and graduated a year early.  The "real" world translated to Japan, where he went on a Rotary scholarship.  When he came back, he attended the University of Virginia and had a double major in Economics and Foreign Affairs.  After graduating, Joel spent four years in the Navy, and then went back to school to get his MBA.  He started working for Wachovia and then moved on to several other financial institutions while he and his wife lived in Atlanta.  At his last job (before moving to LCF) he arranged $30 billion in Foreign Mergers and Acquisitions.  This demanded a great deal of travel, and Delta claimed he was one of their top ten worldwide passengers.  Joel's wife is from Pasadena, and she was the one who decided they would move to LCF six years ago.  Joel is very happy they made the move and wanted to give something back to the community.  He said no good deed goes unpunished, as he discovered last night.  Joel was recently elected to the LCF School Board, and yesterday's Board Meeting ran from 4 p.m. until past midnight.  Thanks for sharing, Joel!  Now we're going to have a lot of questions ... your life path has been so interesting!

THE PROGRAM

Colleen McKernan and Adrienne Bolger presented a very interesting and thought provoking presentation on preparing for that time in life when someone who wants to continue living at home needs assistance in caring for himself or herself.  Colleen and Adrienne's business helps people assess those needs, look for solutions, and implement the solutions.  Foothill HomeCare Partners, Inc. is based in Sierra Madre, and the company brochure describes their service quite well.  "Enjoy the comforts of home for as long as possible!  Our caring service makes it possible for the elderly to maintain as much independence as possible, by providing the appropriate in-home assistance and companionship.  In that way, we lift spirits, not only of the elderly, but of the family caregivers."  They described various types of assistance that may be needed and covered topics on health, financial, transportation, housekeeping, safety, meals, etc.  Planning before the need arises is critical, and communication is the key.  Whether you are planning for your own future needs or trying to help someone else plan for their future or current needs, there are many considerations and options.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Jack Dawson … thought he resembled Joel's description of engineers (dull and uninteresting).  Was that a Happy or a Sad Buck?

Jim Edwards … was Sad about USC's recent loss ... but now that USC is a losing team, he is Happy 'cause he is sure someone will be willing to bet with him again.

Mark Alexander … had two Sad Bucks.  One for the Rose Bowl loss, and second for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling against LCF which made the front page of the Los Angeles Times today.

Mary Gant … was also Sad for Mark Alexander and the City of LCF, but thought Joel Peterson might help Mark "get around it."

Clyde Hemphill … was pleased and very Happy with the successful New Member Orientation lunch held yesterday.

Daryal Gant … wasn't well heard by this editor, but it sounded as though he had a Happy Buck since he ended by coaching everyone to say "we are party animals" whenever anyone asks us what we do at Kiwanis.

Joel Peterson … thought he was going to set a record of five years wearing a temporary Kiwanis badge, but was Sad  because he inadvertently completed all his requirements and will be getting his permanent badge.  (Sometimes the wheels turn very slowly in our Club, so, Joel, you may not get your new badge as soon as you think!)

Pat Anderson … had a Sad Buck because of the 9th Circuit Court decision, but was Happy that LCF made the front page of the L.A. Times and the Times got the city name correct.  Pat also had a Happy Buck because Mary Gant has been named Community Volunteer of the Year by the LCF Chamber of Commerce.

Bob Martin … had a Happy Buck for the beautiful display of specimen camillia blooms at Van de Kamp Hall last week.  Tom Gilfoy walked away with eight awards, and Bob was very pleased that he earned three himself.

Diane DellaValle's friends from Tucson had a Happy Buck for being introduced to Kiwanis and thought they would look for a Kiwanis Club in Tucson when they get home.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows, Jack Dawson leading My Country Tis of Thee, Happy Birthday, Hi Neighbor and Hail Kiwanis

Opening: flag salute by Chuck Gulick and inspiration by Bachy Bachmayer

Guests:  Diane DellaValle introduced her house guests who are visiting from Tuscon, Mark Alexander introduced LCF Deputy Chris Deacon, and Charles Broberg introduced Val Clark.

Master of the Cash Box:  Mary Gant

Birthdays:  Bill Scherkey admitted he will be 64 tomorrow and donated a dollar for each year.

Kiwanis Defining Statement Challenge:  The Prez first drew Diane DellaValle's name and was sure he would owe a dollar.  However, Diane owed the dollar as she suddenly became nervous and started receiving thumbs down from the crowd before she got to the fifth word.  Joel Peterson was the second name pulled from the jar, and this time the Prez did owe the dollar.
