WEEKLY MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

 

MUSIC:

Tom Burrows on Piano and Ed Moulton led us in God Bless America.

OPENING:

 The pledge of allegiance was led by Carl Christensen, and the inspiration was presented by Chuck Gulick.

 

Guests were introduced—Pamela Towery, daughter of Lloyd Welch, and Bill Hackett, representing Assemblyman Anthony Portantino.  Ed Moulton led us in ”Hi Neighbor.”

The cash box handler was Kevork Aposhian, who collected from members without their Kiwanis pins, and those who had not shaken the hand of the “secret” greeter, guest and speaker, Lt. Gov. Heinrich Keifer.

 Birthdays and Anniversaries

Birthdays were announced for Rion Zimmerman, George Lutes and Dr. Al Perry, Sr.

 

Anniversaries were revealed  of Joel Smith, Jack Dawson, and Jim Edwards.

 

 

KUDOS

President Nick Berkuta presented a well-deserved “Kudo” bar to Wendy Smith for producing our “Comedy Night”  social and fund-raising event at the La Canada country club

Happy and Sad bucks

Happy/Sad bucks were forked-over by:

 

  • Jim Edwards—Wife’s son is now a coach for UCLA. (Ouch)

 

  • Tom Slaughter for Pat Anderson’s new car.

 

  • Mary Gant for Pat Anderson being named one of the “Fifty Fabulous Women of the San Gabriel Valley.”

 

  • Tom Burrows for being able to move back home seven weeks after the rains.

 

  • Carl Johnson for losing 25 pounds by laying off sodas.  (Duuuuuhhhh.)

 

  • Brian Fuller for Scottish Heritage Tartan Day  (no kilt).

 

  • Wendy Smith for Linda Magarian’s heavy duty work putting-on the Comedy Night, and arranging our Happy Hours.

 

  • Mary Ann Berkuta for Nick’s ability to abandon his scooter.

 

  • Carl Christensen for no one noticing his stature near the dais had shrunk.

 

  • Dave Spence,  recognizing Don Voss as the new Mayor, bless his heart.

 

  • Nick Berkuta, also for losing the scooter, and soon the boot.

 

Announcements:

 

  • Bill Hackett presented president Nick Berkuta California state government recognitions for his work leading the club in assisting the city with rain relief efforts.  There was a state assembly certificate signed by Assemblyman Anthony Portantino and a state senate plaque signed by Carol Liu, both of whom are members of our club.

 

  • .  Brian Fuller appealed for volunteers to do the weekly bulletins.  (C’mon, people—step up. )

 

  •   Bill Watts offered an interclub upcoming with the La Canada High School Key Club.

 

  •   Nick Berkuta announced that the club had received recognition by Cal-Nev-Ha for a successful interclub “Round-Robin patch for last year.

 

  •   Joel Smith—don’t forget the work-day Sunday at the Community Center.

 

  •   Linda Magarian said not to miss our Happy Hour at the New Moon, this coming Friday at 5:00.  (Last person there pays for all drinks.  It’s in the by-laws)

 

  •   Pat Anderson reminded us of the Chamber Mixer next Thursday at Kobeissi  Properties, 5:30.

 

  •   Pat Luangeaktrakul told us of “Going Green Day,” Sat April 17, at Citibank, 2350 Honolulu, 10:00 – 2:00.  Drop by.

 

  •   Bob Wallace stood in for Howard Baker, reminding us to put a few bills in the Dr. Training collection cans on our tables.

 

Program

 

Our Lt. Gov., Heinrich Keifer received standing applause, and was our program speaker for the day.  Heinrich  gave inspirational remarks around certain themes important to Kiwanis at every level. 

  • Membership growth—this is “growth month” emphasized by Kiwanis International
  • He outlined seven steps designed to help our community and the club, all stressing attitude, behavior and commitment.
  • Heinrich also stressed the importance of a community survey to assist the club in planning what to prioritize, things to continue, things to discontinue, and programs to start.
  • He encouraged member attendance at the international convention in Las Vegas, where many important issues will be discussed and decided.
