The Prez sez . . .

Club President, Diane DellaValle announced that on Monday, September 15 at the La Cañada/Flintridge Country Club there will be an opportunity for a fun evening, and especially for new members, it will allow a glimpse into the structure of Kiwanis.  The event is the Installation Dinner of our incoming Lt. Governor and his 2008-09 Team.  Diane apologized for the error in the price which was erroneously listed as $35.  It is actually $40.  Seventeen of our club members have signed up so far, and it would be fun to have the most members present of any of the 12 clubs in our division!

Speaking of other clubs in our Division, Kiwanis Club of Verdugo Hills is sponsoring a 3-day Carnival Cruise to Baja Mexico from October 31 to November 3, which includes a Masquerade Ball.  Interior cabins are only $230 per person.  If four members sign up it will make an Interclub.  Those who cannot go on the cruise can buy a raffle ticket for $1, or buy 20 and get five free (25 tickets for $20).  The winner need not be present.  First prize is $1000; second is $500, third is $150.  There will be three consolation prizes of $50 each.  Diane made tickets and brochures available after the meeting.

President Diane announced the Board Meeting on Thursday evening, to meet in the Community Center, just below Foothill Blvd. on Chevy Chase Drive.  For new members, attending a board meeting is item #2 of your requirements for a permanent badge.  Also on Thursday evening, August 7, was to be a crime-and-drug event at 6:30 p.m. at the Viet Nam Memorial on Honolulu and Ocean View in Montrose.

Club Announcements

Patricia Anderson announced that the new business in the Town Center opening in November will be AT & T Mobility.  Regarding restaurant availability on the corner, only one restaurant now is being considered.

Frosty Boyd was the subject of another announcement.  Frosty was very appreciative of the card which members signed for his wife, who has cancer of the pancreas.  Please give “Frosty” a call to encourage him at this difficult time.

Howard Baker solicited bucks for the doctor program.

Mary Gant announced the theme for the Kiwanian float for 2009’s Rose Parade.  It will be “Mechanical  Melodies.”  Mary promoted the Silent Auction at the upcoming Wine and Gourmet Food event, encouraging donations and offering posters and flyers.  Ticket sales for this event are in progress.

Harriet Hammons will be compiling a list of appropriate books for the Literacy Program which will start up again in September at Union Avenue School.  Harriet invited members to donate books to this important program.  Students appreciate chapter books and science books.

The Program

Harriet Hammons and Linda Magarian introduced Joe Nardulli, School Principal of Union Avenue Elementary School.  Joe Nardulli thanked Kiwanian friends of the Union Avenue school for the difference they are making, particularly in the “Books have Wings” reading program.  Joe expressed special thanks to Harriet Hammons. Joe engaged, if somewhat unsettled, club members in a written test typically given to fifth graders.  Most club members enthusiastically tackled the math, English, and science questions and were pleased or amused at their results.  Joe presented members with an interesting handout on the history and mission of Union Avenue school, as well as students’ favorable performance and growth over the last decade.  Union Avenue’s lofty and worthy goal is to become a California Distinguished School.
