October - Kiwanis Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF

For their first project, the Builders Club members helped UNICEF raise money to provide medicine, clean water, school supplies and more for kids all over the developing world.  Collection boxes were placed in each of the 7/8 homerooms.  Club members took boxes with them as they trick-or-treated on Halloween, and some members' parents placed collection boxes at their places of business.  Through these combined efforts, the club raised a total of $1,285 over a 4-week period - which turned into $2,285, thanks to a matching grant from the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada.

November / December - LCF Community Center Holiday Food Drive

During the holiday season, the club participated in the LCF Community Center's Annual Food Drive.  Many 7/8 teachers supported the drive by offering their students homework passes and other incentives to donate canned and non-perishable food items.  In just a couple of week, the members collected 314 food items, which the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station distributed to local families in need.  Besides being a huge success, the holiday food drive was a great way to remind students just how fortunate they are, and that the holidays are about giving, rather than just receiving.

January / February - Leukemia & Lymphoma Society "Jar Wars"

Every year, Builders Club helps the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Southern California raise money to fund blood cancer cures and treatment research. With the release of the latest Star Wars movie, the club decided to call this year's campaign "Jar Wars."  Each 7/8 homeroom was assigned a Star Wars character as they competed to raise the most donations and win a Star Wars-themed party.

Unfortunately, almost everybody knows someone who has been touched by cancer. There was a tremendous outpouring of support, and the Builders Club was able to raise $1,022. This earned the club a Silver Award from the Leukemia and Lymphoma society for raising the second most money of any school in the region! While the members knew that the award was a huge honor, they felt knowing they'd helped to battle cancer was thanks enough!

March / April - Ascencia "Hygiene for Hope"

Ascencia is a local non-profit organization dedicated to helping homeless families in the greater Glendale area by providing temporary shelter and job-placement services. For their "Hygiene for Hope" campaign, the Builders club members worked with the 7/8 homerooms to collect travel-size personal hygiene items that Ascencia could distribute to families staying in their shelters.  These items will help make the shelters more sanitary and comfortable and help adult job seekers look their best for job interviews.  This year the club collected a total of 808 items!

   Member Reflections

"I joined Builders Club because I wanted to help others. At first I was nervous, because everyone in the club is so different, but we all came together for a common cause, which is to make a difference in the world."                                                                                                                                                      -- Savannah Rogan

"Builders Club was awesome! You get a good feeling every time you help people in need. This club has also helped me improve my leadership skills. I am typically quiet, so Builders Club has really helped me with speaking up more."                                                                                                                                   -- Max Bohan Apfeldorf
